Overview
More
The museum exhibits in 2 buildings and on 6 floors Germany`s most important collection of legal history. The highlight of this museum is its exploration into the unusual law enforcement techniques used by local rulers in medieval and early modern times, such as torture instruments, shame punishments or instruments to execute corporal punishments or death penalties. Numerous displays, original graphics by famous masters as Dürer, Grien and Rembrandt as well as original documents, seals and law books from the 13th - 19 th centuries show the development of law in past centuries. The homes and walls of Rothenburg show visitors the mileau of times gone by without telling much about the lawful circumstances of its residents. Arising questions? This museum is in the back of an all church. Most is written in German, but there is a lot of English. If you enjoy history, crime & punishment, this museum is fascinating. Truly a study into the craziness that is the human mind &...More

Great way to see how it was back then. Lots of exhibits to see over many floors. Shows many aspects of Medieval life from school, work and the many ways to die :-)

Beware this museum is VERY big. Took us 3 hours to get round - but lots of places to stop and rest. Very interesting exhibits - and good to see most of the labels were in English. Staff helpful - warned us about access issues....More

Much bigger inside than you would think. Much more about social history than torture, has a wealth of exhibits and is well labelled in English. There is a cafe in a courtyard inthe museum to refresh flagging visitors

This place is for people who have an interest in medieval times and devices used for torture or punishment back in early days. Fascinating exhibits with good descriptions in at least two different languages (German and English). We happened in to an additional exhibit of...More

A few years ago we visited the museum. This is a very interesting museum. It shows much history on old laws and punishments. Check out the masks, they are phenomenal.

I’d probably give it 3.5 stars. It’s has really cool stuff, but the ratio of price vs hours of entertainment is steep. They force you to climb the steps to the top floor before you can go down to the exit, which was a pain...More

It shows many strange ways to shame people into being good Citizens ,apart from the brutal methods of torture & exicutions .It's on 3 floors and without a lift . Hidden behind a church in restoration it's easy to miss . DON'T
