The history of Nuremberg's rock-cut cellarsSouthern Germany's biggest rock-cut cellar mazeThrough many centuries, the citizens of Nuremberg have built vaults and corridors into the bright red sandstone below their city. In 1380, the widespread cellar system was mentioned in a document for the first time. In all those years, the cellars were primarily used for the ripening and storage of beer – mostly the city's famous red beer.Today, the craft brewery Hausbrauerei Altstadthof again uses a small part of the widespread maze-like cellar system to ripen and store specialty beers and beer schnaps.Of course, visiting the craft brewery and the whisky distillery will be part of the tours. Afterwards, there will be time to taste the local specialties in the brewery tavern. Just come around, it is worth a visit!

For me, this was my favourite attraction in Nuremberg. The tour was supposed to be in German, however as most of us on the tour were English, the guide decided to do it in English. We had the audio guide with us, but didn't use...More

I've been on other underground tours, such as natural caverns and catacombs, but this tour of the old brewing cellars beneath Nuremberg is pretty unique. Not only do you get a sense of how the cellars were used in medieval time for brewing beer, but...More

This is an excellent way to spend a few hours and get a completely different view of Nuremburg. The explanation, albeit through an audiogram was very informative. Well worth the money.

The Subterranean Nuremberg is not well know to the general public. However, it is since several centuries that this tourist attraction is hidden beneath the street of Nuremberg. We thoroughly enjoyed this 75 minute visit of the underground of the city. Our local tour guide...More

Great information and history, excellent way to spend a few hours. Tour is sponsored by a brewery nearby, so you will get a bit of a sales pitch at the end, but its a great tour with lots of great information.

This is really a fascinating tour underground. The people of Nuernberg dug cellars 4 levels deep. Right under their houses. They used these cellars to store their favorite beverage at just the right temperature. What's their favorite beverage you ask? Well- BEER of course!! The...More
