A Historic Gem
Dec 2019
A fascinating bit of history regarding how some Germans refused to walk by a certain spot where they would be forced to give the Nazi salute, similar to how people in North Korea have to bow to statues of the Kim family when walking near them. It's a wonderful form of silent protest and details like this help tell the story of this beautiful city.

We absolutely love the history of this place

Known as Druckebergergasse 'shirkers alley' - it has golden tiles on the ground commemorating those locals who used this route to avoid the Feldherrnhalle, thereby avoiding the requirement to hail the guarded structure with a Nazi salute.

The Protest Street
Jun 2019 • Family
Munich was the birthplace of "The Movement", so it is comforting to find and celebrate places like Viscardigasse street. This street was used by people to avoid the Odeonsplatz where there was a Nazi memorial to those who died in the 1921 Beer Hall Putsch. It now has become a sort of symbol of any protest, so my son and I walked down it in solidarity of protest.

Interesting Piece of Historic and Important Trivia
May 2019 • Couples
This small street is located behind. Feldhermhalle near Odeonsplatz. During the 1930-1945, the Nazis made Feldhermhalle a memorial to the 16 Nazis killed during Hitler's failed Beer Hall Putsch (coup). Hitler also required anyone passing by Feldhermhalle to perform the Nazi salute. Those brave residents who opposed the Nazis and did not want to give the Nazi salute would bypass the site using this street. Gold paving stones mark the area as a reminder of this civil disobedience. There are also 2 plaques at either end of the street that explain the significance of street.

Street of conscience
Jun 2019 • Solo
This small street is just behind the Feldherrnhalle, on the southern side of the monumental loggia on the Odeonsplatz. During the National Socialism period, the Feldherrnhalle was declared the site a national landmark, requiring that passersby perform the Nazi salute. Those who opposed the National Socialist would avoid passing the Feldherrnhalle altogether and bypass it using this street.

There's a plaque at both entrances to the street explaining the historical significance of the street. Not a must see, but an interesting piece of trivial.

Finding it fun

Just finding it is quite fun. Just behind Odeonsplatz. Unique little Memorial to those who did not want to give the Nazi salute when passing.

Understated but powerful memorial
Jan 2019 • Solo
If you need proof that not everyone in Germany was thrilled by Hitler taking power, then this humble cobbled street running parallel to Odeonplatz behind the Felderrhalle has an incredible history. From January 1933 anyone passing through Odeonplatz had to give the 'sieg heil' salute to the Mazi armed guard posted by a memorial to Hitler's Munich Putsch. Those who couldn't bring themselves to do that cut through here - a gold trail has been painted across the cobbles to remember the bravery of these dissidents. Well worth a look.

Must See!!
Jul 2018 • Solo
This is a must see, as it commemorates those that didn't pass in front of the memorial to those that died in Hitler's failed beer putsch.

HITLER'S EARLY DAYS
May 2018
There are many tours that take you through Hitler's past in Munich. Conversely just google and read up and discover on your own like we did. Very easy to find this place of dissidence and the shiny cobbled stones thats a signature.
