As in the majority of great cities the public transportation system is one of the way to get around the city - relatively cheap and fast - Munich is no difference.
The MVV- the Munich Metro and Train (bus , etc.) system is very convenient. When I was there in November 2021 used it again to get to and from Marienplatz.
Trains come on time , cleanliness was not the best this time ... but is also about the users not only the duty of MVV to keep the trains clean.
Tickets you can get from wending machines ... you pick your destination on the screen - it is in several languages so is no issue if you don't speak German ... and you can use card or cash ... so its only 1 minute to get your ticket.
If you want to get around Munich relatively fast this is one of the options I recommend.
MVV is there you just need to use it.

Took their train systems round trip from the Munich international Airport to the city center. Trains were always on time, clean, and pretty fast.

Used both Underground and overground. Spotless, lots of carriages and plentiful. Last day of our visit went a bit pear shaped closed a number of lines at 11pm due to major works hundreds of travellers went crazy try to find ways to get out of the city although if you spoke German (Not us) there was plenty railway staff pointing people in the right direction

Great tram system, some new trans and some older ones. A great way to ride around the entire Munich area. Buy a day ticket and take a ride or two. A great way to see the city.

As you would expect. The trams, as well as the trains and U-Bhan are very clean and efficient. You can get close to just about anywhere you want to go with this system.

This is the 4th time I've been to Munich and the first time I have been massively unimpressed with the transport system. It started when we had a 30 minute delay coming from the airport because a helium balloon in the tunnel shut down the entire system. We were there for 3 weeks and ended up walking everywhere due to the expense and the complexity. The ticket machines were so complicated and confusing we ended up buying an incorrect ticket. We were told we could get a refund but when we went to the Main Office there was at least a 5 hour wait! We thought they were joking but everyone in line assured us they were not. So there was 15 euro down the drain. The schedules were even more complicated since the trains run much more irregularly than they used to and trying to figure out which trains would actually stop at my husband's home town took us several days and lots of incorrect information from lots of information desk people. The signage also leaves a lot to be desired- you are directed to a platform but it's the one for trains going in the opposite direction and NOWHERE does it tell you that the trains for the direction you want to go are on an entirely different level. I have used mass transit around the world and used to think very highly of Munich but no more. Also, they are doing a massive construction project so the station near our hotel at Sendlingertor was a total mess. The last time we were in Munich, we used mass transit constantly, this trip we just used it to come in from the airport and for 2 other trips and actually took a cab back to the airport. And the Senior Discounts are really puny- you'll save less than an euro per ride. I will never complain about Philadelphia's mass transit again.

Munich has an extensive public transportation system. It has the underground U-Bahn, suburban S-Bahn that connects to the trams and buses.
Affordable, I bought the 3 day pass. Very easy to navigate. What stood out the most are the many amazing artworks at different stations.

We recently visited Munich and made use of the S1 and S8 lines between the airport and the Old Town, finding this a convenient, easy to use, affordable and timely way to/from the city. Tickets can be purchased at the multi-language ticketing machines, signage on platforms and maps is simply, making navigation quite simple, particularly once you reach the Old Town stations.
Do make sure to do a bit of research before your trip to Munich. It is easy to find information related to the S and U lines, bus and tram lines on the MVV website, TripAdvisor Munich forum or through travel blogs reporting on what lines to use, how to purchase your tickets and make sure of the various MVV forms of transportation. With a bit of legwork before your trip, you'll likely find the Munich public transportation network fairly simple to use.

You can buy the group transport ticket or the Munich card which is valid for a number of days. This will give you unlimited use of all public transport as well as discounted admission or gifts on some attractions. We used it from the airport for 5 days and it gave us discounts off some attractions as well as a free gift from the Hard Rock Cafe.

Hi! Need some advice here. In October, there are 3 of us travelling from Munich airport to a hotel at Frankfurter Ring. What type of tickets would you advise us to get. We arrive in Munich at 1.30 pm and will probably reach the hotel around 3.30 pm after all the immigration and travelling time. We will have some time to move around after checking in. I'm not sure what the pricing is like and what kind of ticket would be more economical.Thank you very much.

Hi - I don’t think I can add anything to the replies you’ve already had but the ticket machines are relatively easy to navigate. It’s a great tram service, easy to use, very efficient and clean. Enjoy your time in Munich, it’s a fantastic city.

Hello! My daughter and I are taking a trip to Munich at the end of June / early July. We booked and prepaid a hotel (Munich Marriott) which we now realize is no where near the Karstadt Department Store and Marienplatz which are two places we need to be to catch up with certain tours. You did a review on Trip Advisor about the subway system. Is that how we should travel? How do we find out about routes and which system to use? We don't speak German and I'm a little worried about missing our tours!
Thank you for any information you can give!

Three great ways to travel; U-bahn (Underground railway), trams and buses. The U-bahn will be your fastest. Try the tram when you've got the hang of Munich. The people at your hotel will show you how to do it and the Tourist Office is at Marienplatz for extra maps etc. They make English language announcements on the U-bahn. Easy than it looks, don't worry.

I purchased a group airport -city ticket on the MVV. Does the one QR code work for all 3 adults? Is there a place where we will scan the app at the airport to board the train?

Hah! It goes to show how much I pay attention. I just looked at my monthly pass. There is indeed a QR code on the tickets. You do not need to scan them anywhere. Perhaps they are for inspectors to scan for validity? As long as you have your ticket that shows a date you will be fine. If and when you buy individual or day time passes or any kind of passes that do not have a date range you do need to validate the ticket the first time it is used at the little blue stamp boxes at the entrance of all public transit. But once it is validated that you do not need to stamp it again.
