This museum has a beautiful collection form early middle ages until 1900. Do'nt try to see it all in one visit. We visited the early middle ages and renaissance collection, which is outstanding.

Great stop on a rainy day, this is the best museum in Munich - just loaded with classical artwork, including towering paintings by Rubens. I mean, some of his paintings are huge! We had to double back to ensure we hadn’t missed any of the rooms - there are quite a few with no obvious paths to optimize your viewing. Thoroughly enjoyed this world class museum, and ended up spending close to 3 hours here.

So many great artists represented but especially Peter Paul Reubens. Wowed by the number of Albrecht Durer paintings. Note that the staff seems to be a bit overzealous…I was reprimanded for (I guess) being too close to a display case (that had glass on it, so not sure why it was an issue). Some of the detail is very hard to see, especially for those of us over 50.

I am primarily interested in modern art, but unfortunately the Neue Pinakothek was closed for remodeling during our visit. I was happily surprised when we entered the Alte Pinakothek and saw an exhibit that included many of my favorite artists - Modigliani, Monet, Van Gogh, and other fin de ciclé artists. I normally would give this museum a higher rating, when i lifted a hand to point out an art technique to my husband, a staff member overreacted and treated me like a child. I'm 65 years old, and don't appreciate that kind of behavior, especially as I was standing adequately away from the painting. It ruined the visit for me as i was very embarrassed. I wouldn't have had any problem if he had walked over and cautioned me quietly.

A nice art gallery with a number of “old masters”. We had a DK TOP 10 guidebook which placed the gallery in their top 10 sites but also listed the most important paintings to see which was very helpful.

Original DaVinci, Rembrandt, and so many others! Sad that the Goya display was not available, but we intend to go back for it. Amazing to see masterpieces, even if you're not an art person!

Gutted that the Monet exhibition wasn't open here. Really gutted. But some amazing paintings. Especially some of the depictions of heaven / hell. Galleries well laid out, plenty of space to wander around. Some good spots to sit and contemplate. enjoyable.

Great collection of paintings mostly created 1500 and later from various significant Masters. The first chambers have paintings from the pre-renaissance era and heavily focused on religious themes. Also i was impressed from the El greco's painting towards the last chambers.
Sunday is the best day to visit as it requires more than 3 hours to properly explore it and sunday the ticket costs only 1€!

Loved this museum. I believe the only Da Vinci in Germany is located here. Saw other greats from Rafael, Klimt and Van Gogh. Great gallery to spend a few hours.

Excellent collection of European masters including Giotto, Durer, Bosch, El Greco, Bruegel, Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens and more. The Ruben collection includes development drawings and masterpieces like Saint Michael Expelling Lucifer and Rebel Angels, Fall of the Damned and the Great Last Judgement. The large format paintings are impressive. Luckily, we managed to walk in just after the museum opened to get our tickets. After nearly three hours, there was a line for tickets out the door.

Is it necessary or even possible to purchase tickets in advance? Is there a waiting line to get in?

We arrived on a weekday just at the 10 am opening and there was no line. Due perhaps to the renovations and the smaller collection on view, there did not seem to be very many people, even by noon.

Is there any way to purchase a guided tour for just 2 people? I would much rather visit the museum with a real guide than an audio guide.
