The market is packed with food stalls and tables for enjoying some great Bavarian street food and beer. We loved the food and atmosphere so much that went for 2 days.

Wow, you could eat your way though here all day long, but know, it’s German fare, not any sushi or noodles to be found here. More than enough produce vendors, though most were selling the same. I liked the Paulanner beer garden set under the chestnut trees - buy your beer then find a table. That’s what I did while the wife continued shopping. It appeared to be closed on Sunday. Just around the corner from the Marienplatz.

This place is fairly hyped and popular – and honestly, for pretty good reason. Here, you will find a square full of market stall selling all sorts of food…there are butchers, a fishmongers, flower shop, produce stands, coffee shop, a few craft shops….there is also a nice outdoor biergarten.
This is NOT a criticism at all – I think when I went there for the first time, I was picturing the equivalent of the Nauschtmarkt in Vienna or the Food Hall in Budapest…this place is smaller and less diverse in what is offered. So, initially it didn’t mirror what I was expecting. But that is FINE…
The market focuses on fresh, local foods and produce (apart from the fish which most of it must come from the sea)…there are food vendors here for sure, mostly selling pork products…sausage, meatloaf type stuff, pretzels etc…real Bavarian food
I know several operators offer Food Tours there….I didn’t go on any of them…I would think though, that you could probably do a self-guided food tour there pretty easily though.
Despite my initial impressions, I did end up going here probably 6 times in a week – so obviously it was pretty decent. I would certainly recommend.

This is a must see attraction in Munich. The atmosphere and the food is excellent. Every new city I visit in Europe, my first stop is their local market scene. This market was one of the best.

Lovely authentic market area with lots of eateries and an open plan seating area to enjoy a beer.

Food tasty, authentic German foods. Traditional beers with fast serving.

Great place for people watching & saw some great characters as we sat in the sun enjoying our food/ drink. Well worth a visit or two.

Awesome Market! If it is food related you can buy it here! They have everything from restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, ice cream shops and all the ingredients to make a meal. Part of the market\t is outdoors and part is indoors. You can easily spend several hours shopping and getting lunch. It is more or less in the center of the attractions so you can stop by frequently for a meal or a snack. It is really an attraction in its own right.

This is a place to get a feel for old Munich. Many of these vendors have been here for decades. One can find local fare to eat on the spot or to bring home. Greenery abounds as well. There is a beer garden in the center where you can pause for some refreshment and people watch.

I love the market, and it was picturesque. The definition of a German market. The only negative was that the vendors were a little rude to our kids.

If you are in the area it is definitely worth walking through the market just to get a flavor of what is for sale. Typical things that you would find at an open market though prices are not cheap and unless you have a kitchenette with your hotel/rental, it’s more for gazing than shopping. The larger supermarkets are cheaper but what would a visit to a large city be without wandering through a market such as this. The price assuming you don’t buy anything is right. Enjoy.

Viktualienmarkt is a nice place to walk around and buy some snacks. Not all the prices are so high so shop around. The Beergarden is a great chance to meet some locals. They serve various Munich beers depending on the day.

Tourists should beware of the extremely rude saleswomen at the “Holzwaren - Birgit Peter” stand and “Gifts Made in Heimat” shop. These women treat foreign and local customers with contempt. As their businesses rely on us to shop there, they should be more pleasant. They show the ugly side of Bavarians, who are otherwise nice people.

Don’t miss lovely Gärtnerplatz nearby:-)
