- David NHawthorne, California778 contributionsA Great Place to Start Your Visit of MunichThere are many attractions within walking distance of Marienplatz, so it is a great place to start your visit. During the holiday seasons, there are Christmas markets and Easter markets here and farmers markets at many other times throughout the year. I recommend scheduling your visit so that you can enjoy the mechanical Glockenspiel performance on the tower of the neues Rathaus. It begins at 11am and 12pm daily.Visited October 2022Written 16 December 2022
- M i l e n a🌹🌟🌹🌟🌹Munich, Germany2,459 contributionsChristmas MarketAfter 2 years of hiatus, Christmas markets finally opened again in November-December 2022. Of course, we could not miss the opportunity to visit the main market of Munich at Mariinplatz and nearby streets, enjoy the pre-Christmas atmosphere, eat delicious meat with onions, grilled with a fire smell, prosciutto crudo in chibatta, various sweets and wash it all down with delicious gluwine or egg punch, which, when warm, are especially good for drinking in the fresh air. And also buy something interesting handmade for the Christmas tree or home for Christmas. I liked it very much. Prices, of course, are higher than they were, but inflation is all around. In general, everything is super.Visited December 2022Written 5 January 2023
- mujerlindaHouston, Texas222 contributionsGlockenspielWhat a delightful Christmas market! I loved all the lights, all the vendors, different Christmas market mugs, Gluhwein, food.... When the Glockenspiel played (11 and 12 am), everyone stopped to pay attention. It was magical! Not all the merchandise you see is handmade in Germany, though. Quite a bit is imported from China. Check before you buy!Visited December 2022Written 12 January 2023
- Kendall K782 contributionsMarienplatzThis location reminded me of the central square in Prague. There’s a very nice structurally designed building with a beautiful dancing clock. If you’re in search of places to shop there is no shortage of business around this central point. You even get a great shot of the twin onion towers too. It’s a nice place to get a quick photo op.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 January 2023
- IgnatiusSingapore, Singapore149 contributionsTake in the view and marvel at it's presence within the shopping belt of Munich! An architectural marvel, looking from the outside its quote an amazing structure with the rich history behind it. If you are looking to catch the clock turning the timings were 11am and 12pm during the day I visited which was a Friday. Going through it. there is a very nice courtyard whereby it gives you a view from inside the structure and somehow standing at the courtyard gives a very serene feel. I think there is a paid entrance or climb to the top but I didn't take that up.Visited December 2022Written 5 February 2023
- L HChicago, Illinois1,910 contributionsNice cityGorgeous buildings, great shopping (there’s an incredible Christmas market in the winter) - do not miss Dallmayr (a block off Marien Platz), nice people. The glockenspiel clock in Marien Platz only goes off twice a day (8 am & noon). Note to sock enthusiasts: the selection is incredible at Ludwig Beck; lots of high cotton & silk content, and they have (gasp) lots of different SIZES!Visited December 2022Travelled with friendsWritten 12 February 2023
- KbwhatDenver, Colorado205 contributionsPerfect Christmas market tripI have always wanted to go to Germany to see the Christmas Markets…our first stop was the market at Marienplatz. When we came up the stairs from the train and were surrounded by the gorgeous buildings and the stalls at the market, I was blown away. It had snowed so that made it all picture perfect. What fun it was going through the stalls and eating wonderful cookies and drinking gluhwein. We searched for the perfect gluhwein mug to take home as a souvenir. Beautiful city and friendly people.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 18 February 2023

It is a do not miss experience when visiting Munich. Make sure that you arrive early to get the best vantage point to see and hear this charming spectacle.Visited May 2022Written 5 March 2023

Its history dated back to 1158 founded by Henry the Lion. The Marienplatz is the point at which all important streets meet and is the centre of Munich's life. The square is surrounded by important buildings and shops. The St Mary cathedral and St Mary Column are situated in this square. Many street personalities and street musicians are performing in the square. Packed with people and shoppers. A place for us hang out and shopping in Munich.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 11 March 2023
- Ravana GWarsaw, Poland29 contributionsMarienplatz and Neues Rathaus streetsIn general a nice street, similar to the most city centers in big European countries. Plenary of shops, stores, restaurant and bars around. Main sightseeings like Asam Kirche , Frauen Kirche situated in this street. While walking down Marienplatz will get linked with Neues Rathaus street that is not much different than Marienplatz itself. The one of the possibly most beautiful Catholic Church St.Peter’s Church ⛪️ must be visited in this streetVisited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 March 2023

Christmas Time in Marienplatz Square was Magical. There was a traditional Bavarian band playing Christmas 🎄 Carols on the balcony. Festive and fun. Great Christmas Market with lots to see and enjoy.

Beautiful square which houses a Christmas market from late November.
Helpful tourist information centre situated in The town hall building will give out maps and sell passes. The building's themselves are stunning to look at and the train station provides easy access all over the city and the airport.

Fabulous city. Oktoberfest was fun. Stay in a downtown hotel, saves time. Take the hop on- hop off city tour. You get an overview of the city and go back and visit the places that interest you later.

Marienplatz is a beautiful and busy town square in the heart of Munich. It is easy to get to on the metro or by bike. Come see the glockenspiel (it’ll be crowded then) and don’t forget to got up in the tower or toy museum for a panoramic view.

What train station near the Marienplatz will take me to Garmisch?
j0andphilip
Braunton, UK105 contributions
AS above answer. There are regular trains. Its worth knowing at the moment the whole of Germany, their government are giving all travellers including tourist a 7 euro ticket per person to travel by bus tram and train can purchase from Munich train station. We bought our tickets before travel from the UK and it costed us more as we didn't know.

I honestly don’t know but everything was “open” outside. They were very strict about showing proof of vaccination to gain entry to restaurants.
“Amalfi Coast /—-I’m planning on visiting the Amalfi Coast in September. We are planning on staying in Sorrento. What are the best boat tours from Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi? Thanks. ”

I would first say, please don’t travel at this time! There are too many variables with this virus and the unknown. That being said:
If you travel in September 2021 (😀) you will find many local ferries available to take you to different parts of Italy. There are a lot of local trips that can booked up once you are there. TripAdvisor and Expedia have excellent prices. I highly recommend Hop On Hop off busses in each area. You can travel via train or bus rather inexpensive.
Please reconsider postponing your trip- er on the side of caution

There many alternatives for a lovely boat trip on Amalfi Coast. I would recommend a full day trip to view the whole coast. Next you can choose to have a combined boat- bus trip as well to see some lovely places which not located on the shore, such as Ravello.
I have an 8 hour layover in Munich and want to meet a friend at the city hall and grab a quick lunch before heading back to the airport to catch my connecting flight. Is there a place at the airport to store my luggage?
Qamar M

Yes, Munich Airport has "Gepäckaufbewahrung" i.e. left luggage facility. Just ask the airport staff about its exact location. You can reach the city hall (Marienplatz) by S-Bahn directly. Takes roughly a little more than an hour, so far as I remember.

What is a nice hotel to stay at that is 5min. Or less walk from Marienplatz Square. Will only be there 2 days and want to be in the heart of everything!

Hello,
I stayed at the Europaischer Hof across the Main Station, Hauptbahnhof.
Many hotels around the area. Due to the proximity of the station and the comparisons, the rates are very competetive.
This place was really nice (adults only) and a short walk to Marienplatz Square...about 7 - 10 mins walk, straight. Make a right once you exit the hotel and keep walking. Take the escalators down when you reach it and the the escalators up at the other end and then keep walking.
Keep in mind that everything is closed on Sundays.
I took advantage of the walking tours at Marienplatz and have found them to be very informative.
After the first walking tour, I realized that it I was in the heart of everything, something that you are also looking for.

Hofbrauhaus is really close by to Marienplatz a few blocks in easy walking distance. I recommend you see the beer stein locker room on the 1st floor (really neat) and the upstairs hall (historical site) at Hofbrauhaus during your visit.

I think I read somewhere that from Marienplatz the S-Bahn S-1 to the airport splits in two at Neufahm so if going to Munich airport use only the wagons toward the rear of the train. Can anyone verify that or did I misunderstand.

So sorry, I booked my transfers via internet therefore I have no clue about the trains.
