Beautiful

It’s a nice hiking destination about half- or one hour from Garmisch. The road to it is also very nice. The ruins stand for its name, the view is mesmerizing.
There are no English texts on the info boards tho, that’s why I give only 4 stars.

Magical place!

The walk/hike to the castle ruins is unbelievably gorgeous! The castle itself sits on a hill, with breathtaking views of the Alps. There is also a small restaurant right at the base of the castle that is perfect, romantic, and quaint. Visit this place if you ever go to Garmisch!!!

Worth a visit

This is a beautiful and tranquil spot to visit. Do your own research about the historic significance as there is no information at the site. We took the local bus from Farchant to Burgrain and walked from there. It's not far. Stunning views over the valley too.

When I heard about that place I decided to visit it immediately. It's like a myth of a ancient castle coming true! Really nice and amazing! Easy to reach, you can take child and it worth to get there. Dates from 1230 to 1300. Just few info about that place, that's a pity.

Historic hikes

Burgruine Werdenfels is a historical place including a castle in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. The ruins stand about 80 metres above Loisach Valley between Garmisch and Farchant.

Nice hike up to the ruins and such a lovely view from up above of the beautiful, picturesque Werdenfels region of Bavaria. A must do!

Great view into the valley

The century old castle ruins have been partly restored to give you an impression how this county was ruled and guarded 800 years ago. Depending where you park your car it takes you between 30 and 60 minutes to get there. The trails in the castle may be very slippery! The little hut is a nice place for a simple but good and tasty meal and the Kaiserschmarrn is the best in town!

A hidden gem well worth the quest

it was a haunting ruin of an ancient castle accessed through a cool alpine forest hike. it was not very obvious how to get there at first but once you figure it out, you are rewarded by some stunning views. you can see the main castle ruin (there are various spots identified on the trail markers) from the main road in Burgrain in the valley below. but i couldn't find where to park the car and hike up. i eventually saw that you can access the hiking trails from up in the hills above and behind the ruin, near Pflegersee. the trails signs are in German and a bit confusing at first (the main ruin is location 6 of 7 identified along the various trails). i enjoyed it immensely.

Ruined castle
Sep 2015
A good walk from Garmisch with several routes available. The one from Farchant and Burgrain involves a stiff climb. Free entrance to a ruin with some tricky parts to negotiate. Great views of the valley and the WerdenfelserHutte is available for refreshment if open. Bottled beer and a small menu but worth a visit itself.

real history, not restored
Jun 2014 • Family
I love the ruin of this fort. It is quite historical and has not been touristy restored. What you see is what you get from way way back. Be sure to get the history as the visit means so much more (bookstore, tourist bureau), then continue your hike to, Pflegernsee only a short short distance there is a lake with a restaurant built out over the lake. You can even bring a swim for that hot day. Stop, eat, drink before taking the short walk back to the highway OR hike the long way around to the middle of Garmisch.Get all your hiking trails from tourist bureau. Some people bring innertubes and splash across the deep blue lake.
