Beautiful view, and worth the effort
Jun 2019
Amazing panoramic views of the town and surrounding areas. The hike to the summit is not for the faint of heart, but worth the effort. If you love alpine hiking, you will not be dissapointed.

Worth doing
Aug 2019 • Couples
A good little hike, about an hour of climbing. We went up before first light to watch the sunrise. Awesome views over Oberammergau.

Beautiful 1 - 1 1/2 hour hike, varied terrain, cables to assist in steep final ascent, panoramic views from Kofel
Aug 2019
Wear good hiking shoes and bring water on this 1 to 1.5 hour hike (depending on your fitness level). Most of the hike is under the shade of trees, you pass through a variety of terrain as you hike up from field, to woods to loose rock, to a steep granite ascent. There are cables in the granite to hold onto and some metal bars strategically placed to support your feet on the steepest ascent up. (You may not want to go all the way to the top if you are afraid of heights.) There is a toilet at the car parking lot and a restaurant up the hill called Kolbensattelhutte where the chair lift operates. There are lots of roots and rocks on the trail up. At the top there are fantastic panoramic views of the city and a wood statue of Christ on the cross. The homes in the city are very traditional with lots of flowers and painted Bavarain scenes.

Ludwig II Birthday Celebrations
Aug 2018 • Family
The walk to the top of Kofel takes Circa 1.5 hours and needs decent footwear. Towards the top it is quite steep and needs a fair head for heights. There are support ropes/wires near the top which I was thankful for. We visited the day before Ludwig II’s birthday and preparations were underway for the rituals. Next evening we were able to watch the bonfires blazing on Kofel, hear the fireworks and were stirred by the torch-bearing, drumming revellers as they marched through town (until the early hours). I kept waking up when the drumming procession passed our holiday house.

Rocky pinnacle up the mountain
Sep 2017 • Friends
Many tourists come to Oberammergau not only for viewing the beautiful houses but also to climb up Kofel on top of the hill. It is a really difficult task for elder like me. You can take the chairlift halfway but anyway you need to have good physique prior to the challenge. A nice view from the hilltop.

A Must-do in Oberammergau
Mar 2017 • Couples
Quite a steep hike, but beautiful vistas and a very peaceful walk through to forest to get to the top. The last 1/3 of the hike is definitely not for the faint of heart or anyone afraid of heights! You do have to cross a narrow scree field and hold onto cables to reach the summit, but the views are outstanding. Don't attempt on a rainy/misty or snowy day as the granite is perilously slippery! The hike takes approx. 1.5 hours each way for someone of moderate fitness. There is plenty of parking at the base of the mountain, adjacent to a small cemetery... Just follow the signs and trail map!

The Kofel is the rocky pinnacle above Oberammergau
Dec 2016 • Family
Oberammergau has many amazing attractions, apart from the once-in-10-years Passion Play. One of these is the Kofel, the tall "tooth" of rock that stands like a beacon across the Ammer River, towering over the town and valley.
It can, the tourist books tell me, be walked up, but it is too steep for me.
At the top is a crucifix that symbolises the strong faith of the town and its people: at night it is illuminated.
Behind the Kofel's peak higher more distant hills foreshadow the mighty Alps.
Nearby, on the further side of Oberammergau, is the even taller mountain of the Laber, which has a cable car to the viewing station at the top, and walking trails, and, in winter, extreme ski trails.

Great climbing!

Nice hike, with only a handful of cable handrails climbing spots. It's a good climb near the top, and I saw a man with is two 10 year olds making the climb (tho they were lashed together with safety line). Sign the book at the top under the crucifix!

Well worth it

We got the chairlift up the mountain and then walked across and up the Kofel with our two children (aged 12 and 9). They loved the challenge of the climb, although it was definitely quite scary at times as it was steep at the end with cables to pull you up.

The view from the top was incredible and we sat and ate our picnic next to the cross at the top.

The climb down was much easier than we thought it would be and we went back to the mountain restaurant for a drink before whizzing down the mountain on the Alpine coaster. There is a fab play area with zip wires and a climbing frame for the children, as well as a tree top adventure place (that we didn't do).
