Thank you Karwendel Staff!
Feb 2016 • Couples
All I can say is thank you so much to the staff for a great ski trip. I haven't been skiing for some years so I needed a place to get back into it. Also my husband was learning for the first time! This proved to be the perfect spot. Staff was kind, patient, accommodating, and best of all, the prices were so so reasonable.I didn't have a lesson, just used the lift, facilities, and cafe. So glad I found this spot. Very family friendly! I'll definitely be back here again.

Excellent Lessons - Learn to ski or snowboard here!
Feb 2015 • Couples
I went from not knowing how to put on skis to skiing blacks in one week here!

The Riegers, the owners of this ski school, are WONDERFUL and run a GREAT SCHOOL. The instructors they hire are top notch. I took private lessons for one week and was skiing blacks by the end of the week. My husband (who has been skiing since he could walk) said he can't believe I learned so fast. I credit the wonderful teachers and the slopes.

Mittenwald isn't as popular or as big as neighboring Garmisch so you don't have to worry about people surrounding your while you're learning. The mountain is much smaller, but has slopes of varying degrees of difficulty and it rarely gets whiteout like skiing in the Austrian or French Alps. Being able to see where you're going is certainly helpful to a beginner!

If you're learning or who have kids who want to learn to ski or snowboard, bring them here!

it could be better

the skischool is not so bad but definitlly not perfect if you alreasdy have something to compare with... we just spent there one week extra for ski vacation for two our sons 5 and 9). i have to mention that it was a time without vacation at schools in germany, so there were very few people at Mittenwald. the groups of children were not so big (7-9 children in one) only with 1 instructor... it is a pitty, because the instructors were there and they were free... BUT the main point of the oweners is to sell max. private lessons... one more thing what I personally did not like about this schol is : they are not flexible! they have only 5 day course, and if you already come on saturday evening and want to start the course on sunday it is not possible, only with private lessons... and if you come extra for sko vacation only for your children it does matter how many days skicourse you do 5 or 6 days, because littkle children they can do the progress every day.
IMHO
but i would not come back to them again

Small but friendly family ski resort
Firstly i havent a clue what Alyona is on about, the resort has standard T Bar lifts and one training button lift which my 5 year old can manage!

The area is very small so not a resort for adults but for our 2 begginer kids it was just right especially the kinder park which was perfect for them to learn.

We booked private lessons at 315 euros for 3 x 2 hour lessons for 2 kids, not cheap but much better value than group lessons.

I did manage to find a black run, although it was less challenging than some reds i have tried elsewhere. The bump run in between the red and the black was fun but short.

If you have visited sime of the best resorts in Europe and expect the same here, you will be disappointed, but come for a fun family ski and you'll have a great time.

Not so good
Dec 2011
A lot of people, small area, falling and crashing always. The ski lift to the hill is something extraordinary and requires a lot of strength to control the skis to hold this thing and at the end of the trip to let it go, to get a kick on the head, to turn and to try to survive. Did not like that area at all.

Skischule Alpenwelt Karwendel
We took our 3 kids (4, 9, 13 years) to Mittenwald for skiing -- it was their first time on skies, so we booked a course at the Skischule Alpenwelt Karwendel. They claim to have special "Zwergerl" (kindergarden) classes, like most other places. Well, it really wasn't great! 20 kids, 2 instructors, chaos, the parents basically had to watch the kids the whole time -- and pay 30 EUR per day for the 3 hour course! I definitely won't ever go there again with my son (the class for the older kids was o.k., very nice instructor, but also 12 kids, mostly 6-8 years old, not that nice for my oldest daughter)!
