I was really excited to see a museum for automatons as I generally find them absolutely fascinating mechanically and impressive and/or beautiful. However this is not the case at all with the ones here. They are extremely extremely basic ones that were made for shop window displays (like the old cobbler ones where he lifts the hammer up and down).... More

So disappointing to see such negative reviews. We loved it and it brought back a lot of happy memories. The craft involved is aimed at the young of heart and those not bored by the tedium of modern life. From a recreation of Jean-Francois Millet's depiction of French rural life of the 19th century, to the Girl with Pearl Earrings,... More

I had a Lyon city card so I decided to visit this museum. Lyon apparently has a history with making automated dolls so this museum is dedicated to having them on display for visitors. It starts with a demonstration by a staff member on how the automated dolls are made and controlled. You then walk through the museum which will... More

This place is farcical. Calling the mechanised puppets 'automatons' is factually correct but, in truth, they barely qualify for the definition. Each one loops a very simple movement - usually an arm up and down or a head side to side. It's really rubbish this place. In fact, it is so rubbish it is funny. But it wasn't cheap to... More

I went to Museum, without any expectation or ambition. It was just a diversion, but I went affected by the beauty and creativity of the pieces. First one, the logical, manufacture and criativity of these awesome figures, in themselves, are worth the experience. Then the possibility of remembering tales the international literature and French literature, as well as the ways... More

Four of us were staying in Lyon for a few days. We purchased the city card and found the details of this little museum. Decided to go check it out, not expecting much, we ended up having a great time. The museum is small but witty and charming, and the staff extremely interesting. Definitely, worth a visit.

Sorry for being a wet towel, but after seeing the first dozen or so "Automates," anyone but a doll maker or 6-year-old kid would be bored to tears. As it was, we saw every one of the 250 puppets in about 10 minutes. It was nearly embarrassing how limited and amateurish their automation was. Okay, enough bashing. Just our opinion.

My husband and I made a special point to visit this tiny museum and were so glad we did! If you are a puppet, doll, or automaton enthusiast, do not miss this! It is only open from 2-6 pm, daily and costs 9.50 euro each, but so worth a visit!

Beautiful presentation, helpful staff introduction and educational age appropriate questionnaires for the children.
