If you have an interest in Architecture then this is a must see when in Marseille. This is a part hotel part residential development in a brutalist concrete building. The views from the roof garden are stunning.

For anyone who's interested in architecture and its history this is a must! Le Corbusier really took a holistic approach when creating this building. A plus was to see the first supermarket of France and how they had to explain how it worked.

What an amazing building Le Corbu created! We took a guided tour, which is recommended. (Tours in French during the week, in English on Saturday.) The guide was extremely knowledgeable and informative. With the tour, you got to see one of the actual apartments, too. This is a required stop for anyone interested in architecture, urban planning, and post-WWII community... More

Ora Ito started an art gallery on the rooftop of the famous "cité radieuse" designed by famous French architect Le Corbusier ! Enjoy the in situ art pieces , the view and even a drink/dinner/stay in the hotel !

Dating from 1952, this building is out of the way, but worth getting to. You can also go up to the 9th floor. We needed a tram, metro and bus.

We took the guided tour (10 Euros each), which included visiting one of the apartments. The only English tour is at the weekend, so we had to go with the French speaking guide, who spoke very fast, and didn't like me translating for my husband, who speaks no French!! (she said I was distracting her!). So we lost a lot... More

The Cite Radieuse is a masterpiece of Post War planning and architecture, designed to house families after the devastation of the Marseille during the War. It was conceived as a 'City on Stilts', providing all the amenities that people needed (shops, children's creche etc) with each apartment having views over the mountains and the sea and the most stunning vistas... The Unité d'habitation (French pronunciation: [ynite dabitasjɔ̃], Housing Unit) is the name of a modernist residential housing design principle developed by Le Corbusier, with the collaboration of painter-architect Nadir Afonso. The concept formed the basis of several housing developments designed by him throughout Europe with this name. The most famous of these developments is located in south Marseille. You have... More

Cite Radieuse is now protected by UNESCO as a world heritage site. The roof top offers amazing views over the city and the sea, it's a great open air gallery space. Further down the building a small shopping mall, and hotel restaurant that are all classics of this architectural gem. If you like the Barbican in London you'll love this... More

We spent a night in a little double room to enjoy the atmosphere that Le Corbusier wanted to convey designing the building. Visiting the Cite Radieuse is free but also a night in the hotel isn't expensive at all. (The breakfast buffet is not included and actually it's a bit poor.) It has been an amazing experience. It lets you... More
