An excellent route across to Northern Germany.
Aug 2019
This is the second time that we have used the ferry when heading back to The Netherlands from Jutland, Denmark. It avoids the busy autobahn and hold ups around Hamburg. It cost us €10 for the car and the driver and €2 for the passenger.

Today, crossing from Glückstadt at 10.30, there was no queue and we got straight on the first ferry. However, there was a long queue on the other side. Last time we used it from Glückstad we were in a long queue and had to wait over an hour, but still worth it as the traffic delays around Hamburg were worse.

A far less stressful trip too.

An excellent solution heading south (or west)
Jun 2018 • Solo
This ferry is an excellent solution for all travelers who wants to avoid the (potential) traffic hell around Hamburg. Those who have no taste for Autobahn monotony. First time this year, I might make it a standard!

Fun experience / HH A7 alternative route westwards
Jul 2018 • Family
We enjoyed this other way to move forward and skip the trafic on the highway at the roadworks north of Hamburg. Unfortunately many others had the same idea, so the line was quite long and we waited about an hour.
Nice simple ferry and fun ride. Prices are reasonable.
Note: You pay on the ferry and they only accept cash, so get those handy before getting on the ferry.

Crossing the Elbe
Jun 2018
We arrived at Wischhaven and there were nog many people. Nevertheless we had to wait 40 minutes before we boarded. You have to stay with your car until they come and collect the money. Cash only! If you do not have any cash, you get a bill, with a higher amount. There is a depressing cafe, with already sweatened coffee and very nice sausages, and not expensive at all. Also toilets. The conclusion is that it is a very nice trip, but you should have all the time. When we got off, there was an ENORMOUS queue on the other side!!

Worth the wait to miss the Hamburg roadworks
Aug 2017 • Couples
We had travelled north to Denmark, via the Hamburg roadworks and experienced lengthy delays of almost an hour. The traffic held up coming south was worse. On our return we were only too pleased to miss these delays and opted for the ferry. We had about an hour and fifteen minute wait to get on the ferry in the early afternoon, but it was a far less stressful journey. Roads to and from the ferry are very good.

There is a trailer seeking drinks etc not far from the point where you catch the ferry. The ferry had loos and a place to buy refreshments.

Certainly worth the €12 for the trip. Would use again as the roadworks are going on for a long time to come.

Efficient crossing of one of Europe's largest rivers
Aug 2017
The Elbfaehre between Glückstadt (Schleswig-Holstein) und Wischhafen (Niedersachsen) is a convenient and effective way to avoid the traffic in Hamburg, particularly if your destination is in Niedersachsen. Waiting times can be considerable during rush hour and weekends. Midday during weekdays is the best time. The ferry service and staff are efficient and friendly. During summer there is rarely any need to make use of the on board catering on the lower deck but in winter that's a different story. The offerings there could do with some little extras but are good enough for the short trip.I would certainly recommend the trip.

A great way to miss Hamburg
Jul 2017 • Couples
We had been warned about roadwork delays on the highway from Hamburg towards Denmark so decided to cross the Elbe by ferry.
Unfortunately our plan to reach the ferry by 10 pm was thwarted because the tunnel under the Weiser is blocked at the moment. This meant our having to detour via Bremerhaven which annoyed the lady in the dashboard no end and another ferry crossing. We reached too late so had to find a place for the night.
We stayed in the Ferry inn in Wishhafen which was a very pleasant experience. This meant that we caught an early crossing the next morning after a hearty Saxon breakfast.
The ferry is most efficient and enables you to cross well up Schleswig Holstein with a drive across the Kampe? Heide which is worthwhile in itself.
All in all a good deviation to an otherwise long boring drive around Hamburg.

Avoid Hamburg en route to Schlesvig Holstein

A fascinating 30 minute ferry ride across the River Elbe to the delightful town of Gluckstadt. We only waited 20 mins but there ws a big queue the other side so this might be a problem if you are on a tight schedule

Fun, scenic crossing. But get ready to wait!
Sep 2016 • Couples
We decided to cross the Elbe this way, rather than drive all the way down to Hamburg. We were traveling Bremerhaven to Lübeck. The views of huge ships from the ferry were cool, and the price (12€ for two adults in a car) was fair.

But we waited about 1:15 to get on a ferry. And that was on a Saturday in early September. So bring a picnic lunch or a book to entertain yourself as you wait.

Lovely way to cross but Long wait
Aug 2016 • Couples
Not sure if a wait of 1 1/2 hours to get on the car ferry is usual or not, but it was lovely to cross the River Elbe this way. Holiday time meant it was not a problem. Not sure how to check up on waits if we ever go that way again.
