Stunning carved figures on cloister columns

The carvings on the cloister columns here at St. Trophime rival those of Santo Domingo de Silos Abbey in northern Spain (which are the best we have ever seen).

A wonderful monastery in the old center of Arles, well reconstructed and very quiet. You can walk through without a guide and watch wonderful details of architecture.

Of the sights in Arles, this is one to visit. The history, architecture and statues are interesting.

What a beautiful space, both the outside cloister and the interior rooms. A bit more history/explanation would help, but a nice place to visit. Much more interesting than the attached church.

This was the sight I liked best in the whole of Arles. Cool, beautiful, and very atmospheric. Entrance is €4.50.

The entrance to the cloister is to the right of the church facade. It's a gorgeous cloister, full of intricately carved pillars/columns and statues. There is a terrace that gives a good view of the courtyard. The interior of the Cathedral St Trophime is quite simple, but the facade is elaborate and interesting.

We were getting all "churched out" after two weeks in Provence, but this place is just beautiful. The cloister and façade have such beautiful carvings; well worth a short visit when you are in Arles for Van Gogh touring. The church sits on a lovely plaza, across from the underground vaults, a bit spooky but fun.

Visited as part of the Rencontres d'Arles photo festival and got the bonus of this amazing building. Certainly worth a visit in it's own right.

In the center of town, just off the place de la Republice. In the old days Arles was the seat of an Archbishop. The Archbishop's palace is right next to the cloister. The cloister is idyllic and has been carefully renovated.

An amazing building, elegant and peaceful. The short movie gives a good overview of its architecture. The statues adorning the columns are beautiful.
