About
Located in the Dupuy-d'Angeac mansion, a family of merchants, the "Musée d'art et d'histoire" in Cognac offers a set of collections about the history of the region thanks to the collections of the families of merchants. The museum has an archaeological collection with an amazing Neolithic dugout, a remarkable set of paintings from Northern Schools, a collection of decorative art objects, mainly the Art Nouveau style with some creations by Emile Gallé, and also important collection of Saintonge paintings. This old mansion, built in the 19th century and listed in 1943, opens onto the beautiful public garden of the town hall. From 1925, the "musée d'art et d'histoire" moved into this elegant mansion of a cognac merchant of which the old-fashioned charm recalls the glorious days of the cognac, when it was exported far beyond the borders, playing a part in the reputation of the eponymous city.

This place is a proper old fashioned town museum.

There's a room of stone age, bronze age and Roman things found locally. Also an amazing collection of glass from Galle, Daume and Lalique.

Best of all though was the Dutch/Flemish painting exhibition which had some very decent still lifes or what the French more ominously refer to as vivant mort.

Don't miss the Heronimous Bosch look -a- like with visions of hell mostly comprising people piddling on each other and a man smoking his pipe from his derrière.

Wholly enjoyable and set in the jardin public so you can go outside after to paint your own still life if you have time.

I suggest you ask permission if you want to include any 'waterworks'or smoke from an unexpected orofice.

Really good walk around with plenty of interesting things to see, lots of artwork, glassware, etc, good place to spend to get out of the heat.

It is a very small museum, but well worth a visit. We were there in Aug 17 and there was a small exhibit on 150 years of presidential dinners - very interesting. There are some amazing paintings which are worth the price of admission of 5 Euro.

The only down side for a non French literate person is that there are no English explanations of any exhibits.

We happened upon this museum which had a random selection of artefacts and paintings. Not a huge selection to see when we went in July. Nice and airy in a beautiful setting. Staff friendly and approachable.

It was raining so we stopped in. It is worth a short visit to learn a bit about the region and the staff were very helpful.

We did not want too much time in Cognac and although the nice girl in the Office du Tourisme had made an appointment for us to visit the Heraud distillery we went to the Museum instead. Good presentation of the distillation process. Annoying, however, is the mix of the French commentary over the loudspeakers and the English version over your personal headphone. Minor detail.

Whilst it was enjoyable, made interesting by the power cut and being evacuated, we actually learnt more about cognac by doing some distillery tours.
