This is a review of the bar Le 1838, as we did not stay at the hotel; which in itself was beautiful. When we arrive on a Thursday evening, it is pretty much empty besides my wife and I, another couple, and two bartenders. However this was expected as not only are we in off-season of Cognac tourism (October) but there was Covid, which also explains why they didn't have live jazz on this Thursday as their website suggested which has rightly been moved to Friday and Saturday.

The property is quite far in terms of not really being close to any of the main restuarants, bars, shopping, etc but we took a trip there anyway because as their website described "Located in maison Monnet’s former cooperage with over 400 different cognacs from more than 40 producers, our jazz bar Le 1838 is a cognac aficionado’s heaven" this bar sounded like heaven and we were definitely the right audience. The bar is beautiful.. I mean that's it I won't go into all the details it's just really nice.

We looked at the cocktail menu and were greeted with a creative variety of cocktails which were all 16€ and up. Surpisingly no Cognac menu but what can you expect when there are 400 different cognacs available. We instead opted for our usual when we are in Cognac and told the bartender that we'd like 2 cognac-based old fashioneds, each with a different cognac, the cognac being the bartenders choice to introduce us to something new and different. This is an approach I find works well and is an opportunity for establishments to showcase different styles of cognac as well as their own knowledge and execution with cognac. I thought this would especially be the case as they claimed to be a 'cognac aficionado’s heaven' and have over 400 cognacs available. Plus that I was sure the drinks would cost at least 16€ each and saw they used decent ingredients in their cocktails.

The old fashioneds arrived with bottles in hand to showcase the selection he had made and well.... we were not impressed. One of those being Martell VS and the other was one we had not seen or tasted before so could not judge on arrival. Martell VS is a bar's standard cognac, my preference of it is not important but only the fact that it's not what you come to Cognac as a tourist to drink. The cognac we did not know once tasted did not produce any impressive flavor either; they both pretty much tasted the same as well. We later found the unknown cognac at Auchan, which was Lheraud Cognac VS for 19.99€ per bottle.

So we're sitting there in an empty bar, with music lightly playing over the speakers drinking entry level cognacs in a place that has at least 398 other cognacs but I think it's safe to say that was our last order. After we finished our drinks we waited for at least 20mins while the bartender (at this point the only bartender left) socialised with the other couple in the bar. I have no issue with this except for the fact that he literally stood with his back turned to us across the other side of the room and not once turned around to even check if we needed anything; as we were there for 45mins and only placed one order you'd think somewhere between that time we'd get re-engaged if we needed anything else but we were not.

I eventually yelled across the empty room to get his attention, asked for the bill, paid for it (32 as I had anticipated), and we left.

I can confidentely say that I would have no reason to come here again nor to consider the hotel as a place to stay in a future trip. What it offers in visible beauty and ambiance, it does not retun in memorable and unique experiences.

Dear guest, We thank you so much for taking the time to write a review on TripAdvisor following your last visit at Le Jazz Bar1838. We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed the hotel and its architecture. The famous architect Didier Poignant transformed this remarkable site created in 1838 into an elegant hotel “à la Française”, located five minutes away from other restaurants, bars, and cognac houses. As mentioned, the Chais Monnet & Spa is located in maison Monnet’s former cooperage with over 400 different cognacs from more than 40 producers ! We are delighted to inform you that our bar is now open every day from 5 pm to midnight and we have a new cognac menu and cocktails created with premium ingredients and cognacs such as H by Hine VSOP and Lheraud VS. Nevertheless, our main goal is to provide an exceptional experience for our guests, and we are very sorry to read that the service level was not up to your expectations. We would be more than happy to welcome you back to discover our new menu and showcase different styles of our cognacs. You can directly contact my assistant Clémentine Le Fort (direction@chaismonnethotel), to arrange the details of your next stay. Sincerely yours, Kader Bendjeddah

A group of us visted here last week for cocktails and were really impressed. Great cocktails, really friendly staff and a lovely bar. The hotel looked great and had a few restaurants, and having experienced the bar we must check out the food next.
