The apparent austerity of this shale and limestone fortress, which the young king Louis IX had built on the edge of his kingdom in the 13th century, contrasts with the tranquil grounds inside the castle walls and the pleasant residence of the Dukes of Anjou, composed of buildings constructed at the end of the Gothic era. To transform and embellish the castle into a more welcoming home for the Anjou court, terraces and gardens were laid out, galleries built and the gateway erected. The star attraction within the walls of the Château d’Angers is the Tapestry of the Apocalypse or woven in 1375. With its 104 metres in length, it is the largest medieval tapestry anywhere in the world. Open: > 2nd May to 4th September: from 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. > 5th September to 30th April: from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Last admission 45 minutes before closing time. Lots of history and lots to see. Great grounds. A little short on early Plantagenet history though. Walk the walls, great views

I've visited many castles and the odd Chateau or 10 and some of them are just ruins. This one is substantial. The tapestry exhibition is excellent and not to be missed.

Great place to visit. We were impressed by the state this castle is kept. As Eu-member under 25, the entrance is free, you just have to show a pasport. From this point, the whole city is at your feet. Fabulous plants!!

Once you get in, you just need to impregnate yourself with the soul of this incredible place. From the top of the walls you'll enjoy the view, listen to the stories, read the tapestries, enjoy the restaurant and the garden.....

Went here a couple of times during my stay and it was great every single time. They always have an exposition going on and it's free for EU members younger than 25! The tapestry room is impressive and venue is lovely. Totally worth the visit!

A very easy place to walk round, including the ramparts, and the views are worth the walk. Plenty of information on display and a very good model of the castle...Plenty of shade if it's very hot, and a tea room, also in the shade. The gardens are well worth a look including the one's in the moat.
