As chateaux go I found this one to be close to a real castle or fortress. I recall walking up or along a lengthy introduction to the entrance to this chateau after coming here from Tours many years ago long before the range of calendar dates suitable for indicating the time of my visit were made available for completing this... The Fortress is a very interesting site situated high above Chinon it has beautiful views looking down on Chinon old town, surrounding areas and the river. There are 2 forts, St Georges and Fortress Royale and you can do a guided tour if you wish. There are also many photo opportunities from the grounds. After our visit we caught the... More

This is a 'proper' castle as we know it in the English speaking world, not one of those house and gardens chateaux which litter this area. Unfortunately for the English speaking visitor the word 'chateau' means a country house as well as a castle; a proper castle is often called a 'chateau fort' but the authorities here righty avoid the... If you are interested in castles, military power and history, this is a must do place. However, be warned, if you want a perfect mock-up of life in a castle and lots of displays for children, then maybe not. It is a large site, with few restored buildings per se, but those that have been restored are, in my view,... More

A fine example of a fortress, Chinon has history coming out of every tower. Set in a fabulous location for defending, it has been carefully restored, and with it's prominent views over the town below is well worth a visit.

Stunning location, great for learning about the history of France and England. Really enjoyed the whole ambiance of Chinon - particularly the lift from the riverside town to the Forteresse!

I definitely recommend a visit to the Fortress Chinon. It is an historic fortress as this is the place Joan of Arc was anointed to lead the French army. The castle is well maintained and has videos throughout explaining its history. A bonus is the beautiful views of the valley.

We didn't go inside 18 months ago when we were here last but did over the weekend just past... And cannot say enough about the quality of the experience. Fantastic space and place...magnificent views of the valley, and the proprietors have worked hard to bring the history of the place alive.
