Founded in 1101 on the intersecting borders of three regions, Anjou, Touraine and Poitou, Fontevraud Abbey is the largest surviving monastic complex from the Middle Ages. At the heart of the Abbey Church, the reclining effigies of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry II and Richard the Lionheart are a reminder of its close links with the Plantagenet kings. Converted into a prison between 1804 and 1963, then in 2000 designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Loire Valley, Fontevraud lives and breathes heritage, culture, the art of living and tradition of hospitality, continuing to embody its founder's vision of an "ideal city".

An amazing Abbey which is situated in a lovely quaint village with several restaurants. Lots of reviews say you need to spend a few hours here to fully appreciate all there is to see in the Abbey - we thought we'd only want to be there for about an hour - we were wrong!! Well worth the visit.

Being unfamiliar with the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, I didn’t know what to expect. I discovered the rather interesting story about the original abbey, which was founded in 1101, being converted into a prison by Napoleon. I was also surprised to find out that King Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their son Richard the Lionhearted... More

One of the best-preserved and restored medieval abbeys in Europe, Fontevraud offers a fascinating and inspiring insight into its 700 years as a place of devotion, as well as its nearly 200 years as a prison. If you have the budget to stay overnight in the hotel you will be able to enjoy the grounds at your leisure.

Dear Richard, We sincerely thank you for sharing your experience on TripAdvisor. I can't recommend this place enough. What a pleasant surprise! I knew it would be a great stay. It's an Abby. How could it not be wonderful? But, it was such a wonderful experience, my husband and I decided to stay an extra day. We were on our honeymoon and made a promise to return on our tenth anniversary. The... More

A wonderful experience and caters for non French speaking tourists. One downside. We had a friend who had recently had a knee op and she found the terrain difficult in places

We visited this abbey and were truly blown away by its architectural beauty. The restoration, and the information provided by the audio tour, really brings its previous history to life. The church is awe inspiring in its sense of space and perfect simplicity. Well worth visiting and taking time over.
