The chateau of Caen is in reality the impressive ruins of the medieval fortress erected by William the Conqueror. In terms of area, it is one of the largest medieval fortresses ever constructed anywhere in Europe. Entrance into the chateau and to parts of the...More

Quite a bit of this collection spans from the medieval time through the Renaissance and most of the subject matter is religious. HOWEVER - There is also a space for temporary exhibitions that tend to be more modern. There are pieces from the 1600s forward,...More

Bought the joint ticket for both museums, Musee des Beaux-Arts & Musee de Normandie, so you save a bit of money. Went to the Frits Thaulow exhibition which was varied & interesting. We did not visit the rest of this museum.

The permanent collection is rich in not very exciting paintings from the Baroque period but a few truly beautiful pictures make the trip worth wile. A section is devoted to contemporary art. There are regularly organised temporary exhibitions. The 1971 building is an excellent piece...More

Set in a very modernistic building on the Chateau site. Plenty of old masters and a selection of interesting modern works.
