Just to think that this was conceived and building was started in the 11th century by William the Conqueror is amazing. It is situated on a high rocky prominence looking over the river. It had to be impressive and imposing at the same time. A...More

Great views from the ramparts of this old Castle built under William the Conqueror. Great spot for a day out with kids or as couples or alone.

Fantastic and huge castle very close to the center of Caen. Well restored and maintained example of a castle that dates back in part to 1220. The nice thing about the castle is that you don't have to pay to walk around the grounds. You...More

We will be on a Tour of Canadian Battlefields & Memorials in Sept. We're staying at the Mercure Caen Centre Port Plaisance - is this hotel within walking distance of the chateau and what restaurants/bistros are nearby?

Yes, 5-10 minutes walk (slightly uphill some of the way). Plenty of restaurants/bars/brasseries within the same distance.
