We love to wander and explore and came across The Citadel by chance especially as it's not on the main tourist map provided in Lille. It's an interesting area near the Canals, the free Zoo and lovely Jardin Vauban park. A good area to sit...More

This is not a thing. Do not go there, thinking this is a thing, because it isn't. This, is an army base with a canal around it. I was furious. It's massive though, and by the time you realise what a bad decision you have...More

Very pretty and a nice walk but beware with walking at night. During the day it’s lovely and plenty of people around. A nice bike track too and a great way to access the city from lambersart. Can take a short time or a long...More

Quite impressive when you imagine it was built 400 years ago by Vauban the Minister of war of Louis XIV !

In Lille for one night and was looking for a running location. Easy access 1 km from city centre I am rating the park rather than the old fortifications which I did not venture into. The woodland park is tranquil and served by wide well...More

The fortifications were build by Vauban, and are considered some of the best and most beautiful in France. However, the site is still a major military centre, so one cannot enter the fortifications or the citadelle, other than on a few select days per year....More

Lovely grounds to walk around we arrived too late to gain entrance ( just before 4pm) the area also has a free children park that was good in size and a fun fair was close by but not sure if this was permanently placed, a...More

Be prepared to do some walking! Huge complex set amongst some of the most lovely gardens. The walls are facinating along with the lake areas hidden away.

Very nice place where the history and the nature are mixed in an unque way. Itțs a nice, quiet place, very suitable for relaxation

Definitely an enjoyable place to stroll along the paths and moats and marvel at the scale of construction. The entrance gate gives you an impression of the prestige of the Roi-soleil. Just have your eyes open for the bikes - they are a law unto...More

The old citadel has some lovely walkways and scenery around the walls, but the centre is a an active military base and bot available for visits.

I didn't go in the base, which I believe has restricted access. I did have a walk around the general citadel park though and it's definitely worth a visit, particularly given the lack of green space in Lille.
