Lovely museum kind staff

A good collection of art by Ingres and his contemporaries in a lovely and sympathetically restored monastery.
Staff were friendly and went out if their way to help.

We did not know the Ingres Musee was closed so it was a disappointed. They are renovating the place. It's a huge old brick building and contains paintings by other artists too. Darn!

Closed for renovation
Sep 2017
The Museum is closed for renovation until the end of 2019. What a pity! I was really looking forward to visit it as it has the reputation to be outstanding. I'll be back!

We had expected to see more Ingres paintings but the museum was interesting and on lots of floors. I was most impressed by the two lower basement floors.

I came to Montauban for a daytrip and of course I visited the museum. On Ingres there were only two rooms, which is disappointing, plus a temporary exhibition with its sketches. His paintings were interesting but I just walked past everything else.

Beautiful art in very austere museum
Jul 2016 • Couples
Ingres and Bourdelle are great artists who made beautiful art. The examples shown are worth the visit. But do not expect any extras because there are none.

A delight for Ingres fans
Jul 2016 • Family
This is a lovely little museum and is predominantly focused on the works of Ingres. On that basis, it is excellent. Despite my love of art, I found it somewhat lacking in depth (although with a handful of superb pieces) and the poor availability of English explanations, difficult to engage with emotionally. I would go again to see some of the wonderful modern works, the Ingres self portraits and the pottery.

Closed tight 12-2. The guards took a certain pleasure in shooing us away when we had the temerity to arrive at 11:50. What a shame, we'd made a special detour to get there.

Big architecture and a lot to see !
Dec 2015 • Friends
I am not a geat fan of Ingres paintings, but I do love the Ingres museum.
Because you can see there his violin (Ingres earned his leaving playing violin in an orchestra before leaving to Paris), his collections of art he bought when in Rome (antiques, but also old dutsch and italian paintings), ... and some paintings by him.
You can see also a lot of sculptures by Bourdelle, some contemporary art, and collections of local ceramics.
The brick architecture, the XVIIe-XVIIIe salons, with some terra-cotta garden sculptures by Ingres's father, the old medieval parts of the building and the whole site, along the river Tarn, are very interesting too.
Sometimes activities are organized for children and adults.

Very interesting with a knowledgebable guide
Dec 2015 • Business
This is a surprisingly interesting museum, with a good size collection of paintinings by Ingres and sculptures by Bourdelle. With a guide to explain their local connections, it's a very interesting visit.
