To visit the Cathar castles is quite a tour of the Languedoc. If you are into history, it's a must. You can start, like we did, by the Mediterranean coast and then meander through the valleys of what used to be border country between France and Spain, all the citadels, until you reach the ultimate stronghold at Montségur. En route... More

Simply a stunning example of a castle set in the centre of a medieval town, i was given to understand that it has been the location for a number of movies, so in many respects it speaks volumes. Walking the walls was excellent and we could reach a lot further than we expected as you are able to almost circumnavigate... More

The climb up to the castle is somewhat daunting but it is well worth it for the spectacular views and for the sense of achievement. There is not a great deal to see of the castle except for the outer walls, the inner courtyard and the footprints of the residential elements which cling to the rock faces outside. However, just... Scattered all about LANGUEDOC. So impressive evoking a savage history. Glorious drives in the Pyrenees to get there.

These castles must been seen, tourists information will provide you with a list. The castles in the Pyrenees are out of this world, need to be seen to be believed. Get out there and enjoy.

We visited the Cathar site at Lastours, a short distance from Carcassone. The parking was some distance from the visitor centre / entrance, but was a pleasant walk. Access to the site was via the visitor centre, and was not expensive -- the paths and ruins have to be maintained! Reaching the 4 separate castles involved some strenuous walking on... More

This visit is not for the faint-hearted; it is not easy to access the castle but the effort is well worth it. There are magnificent views from the castle and the remains are interesting ans thought provoking. You get a good audio-guide for the visit.

We visted this after the medieval cite and this was just as interesting. Unfortunately due to it being end of season a lot of the shops and cafes were closed so we didn't eat or shop there. But the historical elements is very good. Parking is free and it's free to enter.

Beautiful castle with many alleys and many shops, cafes and restaurants when you are inside. So many beautiful things to buy too and the castle itself is big so you'll get lost so get the map. It is like a puzzle for me to go the entry or the exit.

There are many varied castles built by the Cathars in the Carcassonne region. Some more remote than others. My favourite is Peyrepertuse, more difficult to access than some but very dramatic.
