Easily the coolest thing in all of Versailles. We were told it took 11,000 men nearly 10 years to build this. Its over a mile long and 12 feet deep. PLUS they had to pump the water in all the way from Paris! We took a bike ride all the way around. Its the way to do it!

Located towards the back of the Gardens of Versailles, the Grand Canal was built to embrace Louis XIV's love of Venice. He imported gondolas and gondoliers from Venice to work in his man-made Grand Canal to avoid having to go to Venice to experience the same.

We visited in the winter and I'm sure this entire grounds area would be much better in the spring or summer months, non the less, if you enjoy a good hike and nature, it's a good break from the craziness of the whole palace

This is a bit of a walk from the entrance to garden, but it is worth walking long. There are gondolas and place feels a little bit liike the Venetian canals.

Plan your trip around the timing of the fountain display. It is a breathtaking sight. The fountains are coordinated with music, and the whole place comes to a stop. It gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes. We viewed it from the upper gardens, spectacular, don't miss it.

My sister and I rented a row boat in June 2012 on a beautiful sunny day at Versailles. Lots of others in the canal, but mostly singles. Swans floating nearby. I thought it would be similar to canoeing. Neither of us had rowed before. We ended up getting stuck near the middle of the grand canal which is around 1... More

As we were here in december the Grand Canal wasn't that pretty. It was cold, foggy and the water was dirty. In summer and spring this must be nice.

Had the privilege of renting a small boat here. The experience was amazing and the rental is really cheap. So as soon as you finish the gardens and before venturing into the "allee de la Reine" I suggest you give your feet a break, rent a boat and do some rowing to exercise your biceps. Try not to hit the... More

We were here in November & saw the Grand Canal. In warmer weather what a great place to picnic. Additionally there are boats you can rent & that would be a nice way to pass time.

The Canal seems to border the grounds of the estate limiting access to the gardens. When we were there it just looked like a ditch, but it formed a majestic part of the scenery.
