The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Opéra / Bourse
The neighbourhood around Opéra and Bourse is a belle époque paradise of grand boulevards, refined arcades, and mass-market art-nouveau entertainment. Here, modern day workers continue to take advantage of the legacy that nobility and finance left in the 19th century. Brightly-lit brasseries, theatres, and cinemas sit side by side with French bistros predominating in one area and Japanese restaurants in another. The area is most famous for the Palais Garnier opera house and glamorous department stores.

Racist employees
Feb 2021 • Solo
I am a Black American Yale student currently studying abroad in Paris. I visited Brentano’s today in search of school supplies, but I was met with racism. One of the employees followed me around for the duration of visit without saying a word. Never did he offer me help, he simply just watched my every move. Mind you, there were other customers in the store yet none of them were followed or treated as I (the only black person in the store) was. This is the first time this has happened to me during my stay in Paris, and it was extremely disappointing to say the least. If you are anti-racist, do not go to this store. There are plenty of wonderful Papèteries in Paris, but this is unfortunately not one of them.

Brilliant Book/Gift Shop in a Great Location!
Feb 2020
We were in Paris back in February this year, and we're in the area to see the Palais Garnier, and had stopped in at this shop on the way back. It was such a lovely store with an amazing assortment of unique gifts, artworks and books! We had meant to duck in for a quick look, but ended up spending an hour to look at everything and pick out some gifts and souvenirs. So many beautiful things in this store, that it was so hard to pick just a few! Highly recommend a visit if you love books, homewares, and gorgeous stationary and cards. Loved the vibe of the store too.

Great souvenir stop
Oct 2018 • Couples
I love my retro Paris mug for only 6 euros... Probably the only deal I got in Paris, ha ha! They had a lot of cute souvenirs that are a step up from the typical magnet and postcard shops.

WOW !
Apr 2018
I happened upon this store and was so enchanted, I went back the next day. Whereas it is VERY disappointing that the PUBLIC's interest in books is waning, (therefore, Brentano's is no longer the bookstore it used to be,) it is a magnificent place with beautiful things to buy. Although some people may not appreciate the amount of postcards in there, that is EXACTLY what I was looking for! They are more artful than not, so there are very few post cards with photographs... although the ones they have are lovely. Nothing here is not attractive. I wish I had an empty suitcase to carry lots of things home in ! The people that work there are so friendly and kind. I had a great time talking to them and hearing about the history of the store. Thank you Bruno and your co worker!

A place to browse
Dec 2017 • Solo
I was completely mesmerised by the wonderfully festive and beautiful window display and simply had to see inside. Appears to be more of a card / knick-knacks / gift shop than for books but definitely worth a visit. In the UK we've got so many card shops but Brentano's appears to stock all of the finest of those cards and more; I was truly overwhelmed by the amount of exquisite cards and unique things and ended up browsing for an hour...as well as spending a small fortune!

Formerly Good Bookstore
Apr 2017 • Business
Brentanos's used to be a good source for book lovers. It is now mainly a shop for greeting cards and gifts. The selection is good if you are interested in stocking up on cards and there is the occasional book that you may come across.

NOT JUST A BOOKSTORE...
Apr 2017 • Solo
I have been here since 3 months, and this is my second visit. I enjoy this wonderful bookstore filled with books in English for all ages. Be sure to venture around the corner toward the back to discover decorative plates, and so many unique items. This shop has a mélange of ware from nicely displayed French souvenirs, postcards and gifts. Merci, Pascal!

Worst and rudest manager ever
Nov 2016
We passed in front of this beautiful bookshop and at the entrance there were some books for children that caught my son and daughter's attention, so we went in. A very professional and gentle employee got us into buying several books. I was still looking around when a hysterical manager told me that the kids shouldn't touch on anything -my kids have been taught to behave in public places, they were looking at the books but didn't make any mess-. I took the book that was in my boy's hand and walked to the register. While I was about to pay, the manager went on and on on how kids are allowed anything nowadays, how I was a terrible mother because I couldn't order them not to touch things (!) and I kept on telling him that they were doing nothing wrong and how I would pay for any damage if there was any. He kept on arguing for nothing, because the kids did nothing -the guy shouldn't be selling children books in the first place if he is so horrified by them.-So after asking him his name -which he refused to give me because "it was none of my business"- I left, went to another bookstore, where the children were perfectly welcomed-, spent the 150 euros that I was about to spend at Brentano's and hoped to never have to see that little unhappy manager ever again.

The manager insulted me
May 2016 • Solo
I am an older very honest Canadian woman. I bought a small gift item here yesterday. When I showed it to my husband in the hotel room he noticed that the clasp failed to close properly. I went back today and asked to exchange it for another the same. The lovely clerk on the cash was going to do that, but decided to ask her manager. He accused me of having dropped and damaged the item and refused to exchange it. He was not the least bit pleasant and dismissed me abruptly. It was not an expensive item but I feel that I must comment on how I was treated. I suggest that Canadian and American shoppers avoid this place.

Best Classy Paris Souvenirs
Jan 2016 • Solo
Although I live in Paris, this shop never fails to tempt with its choice of books in English on a Paris theme for all ages. Although it appears small at first glance, check out the selection of gift ideas, pictures and art de table items which wind along the back of the shop. Everything is so well chosen - including postcards and fancy Parisian gift paper - and you're bound to find classy souvenirs of your trip to Paris. Every time I come here, the staff are extremely friendly and efficient. Thoroughly recommended for something that bit different.
