It took many trips to Paris before I went to the 2.62 square-mile 19th Arrondissement, and then I wondered what took me so long. Granted, it is in the far Northeast corner of the city and takes awhile to reach from Tourist Central, but that should not be a deterrent. Once there, much waits to be seen, including two canals... You'll need a good reason to venture into the 19th as it is a ways out, and lacking the signature attractions of other districts. We went to visit the Buttes Chaumont and greatly enjoyed the excursion, but it was a ways. Highly residential with diverse neighborhoods and mixed ethnicities - both Arab & Jewish areas and les Francais. ...

A multiracial arrondissement home of the following sites: - the Cité des Sciences, a scientific museum and events center - the Zenith concert hall - the parc des Buttes Chaumont, one of Paris nicest parks - the Canal de l'Ourcq, where it is really nice to walk along the banks when the weather is good It is a arrondissement with... The 19th arrondissement is far from Central Paris. You will probably only venture this far if it is your second or third trip to Paris and you are looking for things off the tourist trail. In Basin de la Villette the company Canauxrama offer tours on Canal Saint-Martin and Canal Saint-Denis. These are under explored parts of the city and... More

The 19th Arrondissement is not exactly on the tourist path. Located in the north east of the city, this area is home to the Canal Saint Denis and Canal de l"Ourcq. You also have the Parc de la Villette in this neighbourhood. Residential for the most part, it is home to a large North African community. A busy and colourful... More

You may have noticed its newly acquired international fame, as the place where one of the Charlie Hebdo killers met the self-anointed imam who encouraged him to go to Iraq. He did not go to Iraq, but to jail, where he met the other killer. In any event, the network that was dismantled was called the Buttes-Chaumont network and it... More

We spent our 3 days trip in Ibis Budget La villette. Quiet, multi-ethnic and well connected district.

For two weeks this was my neighborhood while vacationing in Paris, and I must say it is a very nice neighborhood indeed! Beautiful, full of supermarkets, fresh fruit markets, boulangeries, ATMs, dining places and everything else you might need. It's very pleasant to walk around its charming and clean streets (not to mention safe, even at late hours), and it's... More

A must if you are in the 19e. As a lover of patisserie I was told of this place by a good Parisian friend. Have visited it on many occasions but feel need to tell you all about it. It is like stepping back in time. Little old lady comes shuffling out of the bakery at back, little black dress... More

Actually, I have a very small apartment in the 19th and I have come to love this part of Paris, which I knew very little when I lived in the city during my youth. Let me describe what you find: a wonderful park, one of the most beautiful in Paris, the Buttes Chaumont, high upon a hill, with vistas of... More

Staying in La Villette

Neighbourhood Profile
La Villette
This futuristic landscape has come to define the northeast of Paris. The Saint-Denis canal is framed with luscious lawns and metallic buildings over a wide-open space. Home to Europe's largest science museum, this area rewards daytime and nighttime explorations; there are three concert spaces, plus cinemas and bars, and even open-air cinema in the summer. The surrounding homes are a sharp contrast to the futuristic space. Though on the outskirts of Paris, La Villette is worth the short Metro ride from the centre.
