I very much enjoyed a short visit to the national archives in Paris. They had on a good exhibit on the ill treatment of women in France, from a Joan of Arc and Marie Antoinette to more recent times, with documents from French history accessible for viewing.

Stumbled upon this building while out walking in Paris one day in September 2013. There are some really nice portraits upstairs that they also made into postcards. Beautiful historical buildings surrounded by lovely gardens full of hibiscus and other flowers. Nice to walk around the grounds on a sunny day.

Interesting display of elegant rooms on 2 floors and French historical artifacts, such as a copy of the Edict of Nantes. There are also wonderful garden areas, and the entry court is quite spectacular.

Not only the Hotel de Soubise is definitely the richest private mansion in Paris at the 18th, but go there not only for the interiors or the exhibitions. Entering all the successive gardens, you"ll discover other constructions from the same period. You may also rest in a very quiet place with benches, shadow, trees and flowers if you're visiting the... More

The historic building and interiors would be enough of a reason to visit, but the Archives frequently has exhibits as well.

One of the few museums open on a Monday, I spent hours enjoying three distinct aspects: an unusual temporary exhibition about explorers, beautifully decorated eighteenth century rooms, and a display of 110 documents illustrating the rich contents of the archives. Arriving soon after opening, I had the place to myself on a wet Monday morning. Very pleased to read that... More

We were headed for the Musee Carnavalet only to find it closed (Monday), so we went to the nearby Archives National and were very glad we did. It's great to find a museum in Paris with no line. The building itself, the old Hotel de Soubise, is a lovely example of French classical architecture, starting with one of the best... More

Hôtel de Soubise is one of the finest private mansions in the Marais district, with reception rooms decorated by Germain Boffrand and paintings by Boucher, Van Loo, Trémolière... The Musée des Archives Nationales permanently displays remarkable documents from the government archives as well as alternating exhibitions. All year round, the Archives Nationales also has a rich programme of events linked... More

We found this building completely by accident since the Fodor's map we had mislabeled this building as a completely different museum (located several blocks away). We walked the gardens and grounds with a really kind pair of Parisian ladies who were eager to help us find the place we really wanted to go, while making sure we knew we were... More

Hidden in the Marais is the French National Archive set in the Hotel de Soubise which is a beautiful old building with the original rooms and decor open to view. At present there is a very well presented exhibition about The Secret State. This costs 6 euro and is well worth a visit.

Staying in Le Marais

Neighbourhood Profile
Le Marais
The Marais is a winding maze of multi-faceted streets that beg to be explored. It bursts with small boutiques, historic buildings, cozy traditional restaurants, and hidden parks. Around each corner, you'll come across little gems of architecture spanning the centuries, from understated medieval towers to classical libraries and 17th century splendour. This neighbourhood unites a rich mix of people of all ages, but it's best known for the gay scene mostly in the south and the Jewish community around Rue des Rosiers.
