A genuine labyrinth in the heart of underground Paris, the Catacombs were fitted out in the galleries of former quarries. Twenty metres underground, the ossuary houses the remains of approximately six million Parisians, gradually transferred between the

end of the 18th century and the mid 19th century, as the capital's cemeteries were closed for health reasons. Along a tangle of dark galleries, visitors discover a presentation of death with bones arranged in a romantic macabre decor. This unique site is a moving testimony to the history of Parisians and invites visitors on a timeless journey.

We waiting in line for about an hour but once inside it was well worth it. I wouldn't wait inline again to see it but everyone should see it at least once.

So yes, the line is long, and yes, there are a good amount of stairs down (and let me tell you the stairs up are not fun) but it's unlike anything else and therefore worth the time in my opinion. The audio tour was informative (maybe too specific for my liking) but did give you context to what you were... More

Get here early or get yourself a queue jump pass (I think for not much more than the cost of the ticket itself). To give some perspective I waited in line from 9.20 and entered at 10.15, it opens at 10am and there were about 35-40 folks ahead of me. It was a great attraction, it's unlike much else I... More

We got here early, even before it opened, and the queues were already starting to build. My advice is get there about 45 minutes before it opens to avoid long queues and the chance of getting in and around. Express/advanced ticket holders got in first so I'd advise getting one of them if you really don't want to queue. The... More

I don't know that you can fully prepare yourself for the full effect of the catacombs. It is a humbling, somber monument. A few pieces of wisdom: spend the money on the skip the line. We paid about $60 for two tickets. I had read conflicting opinions about the line and when we arrived in the early afternoon, the line... More

Long wait to get in 200 folks at a time. Over 1hr wait for a 45 minute visit. It was good although the sewer water dripping in was off putting

Short information - it is at least 1.5km long under Paris walk with some parts where you can see bones. That they do not say is that at the same time there can only be 200 visitors inside and that means, that waiting for tickets can be EXTREMELY LONG - we arrived in morning and waiting time was around 90... I'm not a big fan of cueing but the sun was out so it wasn't too bad. But you'll have to stand in line for like 2 hours. Then the walk through the catacombs is pretty cool. I did get bored after a while but it's cool so I would recommend it anyway, it's something you'll have to see.

Pre booked tickets following Sandman's walking tour and glad we did - not only were the tickets a couple of Euros cheaper, we were able to skip the line at the Catacombs (tickets don't claim to be skip the line but you can as the queue is for buying tickets). My tip would be to make sure you have the... More

Staying in Montparnasse

Neighbourhood Profile
Montparnasse
The namesake tower of Montparnasse dominates over the landscape but the fun part is the throbbing life that goes on below it. Bright lights, busy cinemas, brasseries and diners encompass hidden museums and parks to entertain the masses. Long avenues lead away from the tower to take you to unsuspecting places and historical monuments and treasures. In between lie adorable ivy-covered houses with beams and small gardens to match. Just a short metro ride away from the centre of Paris this neighbourhood has something for every hour of the day.
