Probably the most beautiful place in Franche-Comte ..

A must-go in Franche-Comte. Its style, combined with its position on the highest place in the town makes it a nice place for sightseeing and also for history lovers.

Trying to get into Besancon by car is quite a challenge and when we located a central car park it turned out to be an underground one that was full and impossible to use. Having extricated ourselves with difficulty from this car park, we couldn't face trying to find another location and gave up on Besancon

I must admit that I didn't expect too much from this visit, but passed an excellent 3h here & didn't have a chance to see all of it. The entry price includes an audio guide that gave a good history of the building, the city & the toing & froing of this part of the land. The walk around the... More

We didnt go in to the paid museums but got a bus (No. 17 I think ) straight to the citadel from the park and ride. Got a really good view of Besancon and were able to walk in the outer parts. Then walked back down the steep hill to the city centre, stopping at the cathedral which is worth... More

We took the bus up to the citadelle, using a combined bus and citadelle ticket, this seemed a good idea, slightly cheaper than doing it separately and definitely better than walking or driving up. A very impressive view as we arrived, The museum about World War II was very detailed and harrowing. There are some english translation sheets but it... More

Apart from the history of the fort, we thoroughly enjoyed the exhibit on Nazi Occupation. Some exhibits such as items of clothing, human hair and burnt, charred remains from the crematorium were very moving. The zoo was an added attraction, especially the insects and frogs, as well as the monkey exhibits. Views from the towers are very scenic. The Citadelle... More

A lovely view over the city and river. One can see the sedum garden atop the FRAC. The museum within the citadel are of great interest. Plan on walking a good bit and learning much of the history of the area.

Museum on the Nazi occupation was the main attraction. Plenty of other activities for parties of school children - but you will not find them in the museum!

La Citadelle gives you a beautiful view over the city and a sense of historical perspective. The Museum of the Holocaust was especially daunting and stayed with me for a long time afterwards.
