La Citadelle, with it's combination of fortifications, zoo, and museum, is a great visit for history buffs. The Citadelle itself is in great condition, as a variety of historical factors meant that it never saw battle despite it's prime defensive location. I would advise any animal lovers to skip the zoo, as many of the cages are quite small and... More

An American friend came for a short visit and we decided to walk up to the Citadelle. The view is amazing. There is a great new multimedia exhibit.

I recommend walking up the path from town, though some may get a bit winded since the walk is steep but doable. Amazing views from the wall, zoo had Siberian tiger cubs, amazing but small limited exhibits. Disappointed that the WW2 war museum was closed for renovations. Worth a visit if you are passing through or visiting Besancon.

The Citadelle, is an impressive fort above Besancon, it offers a great view over the city. As you enter from the parking area, pay attention, there are apes in what used to be the moat! There are several museums here and a zoo. Really something for everyone and all ages. Wear a warm coat though, it is cold up there... More

You know by seeing it from below that it's going to be an impressive building and it is. The view you get on Besancon is spectacular. The film they show to tell you the story of the place is really well done and interesting. They show it in the small church, projecting it on the walls and ceiling. In the... More

Definitely worth a visit if you can walk up. One can drive and there is parking at the top. The road network is tricky as there are many one way streets in the old town.

La Citadelle is a fortress located on a hilltop in the city center. The walk up there about 15' but there is also a bus going or you could go by car but it really isn't as bad as it seems. The view is definitely worth it!! The fortress is a combination of buildings some of which are museums, cafes... More

This is a great attraction, from the climb up to it (you pass Victor Hugo's house and the astronomical clock) to the variety of museums and historical information. The citadel is huge and requires basic fitness to see all of it. There is a French Resistance museum and a strange little nocturnal exhibit as well as a cafe and an... More

This place is remarkable. They have taken a well preserved world heritage site and added the attraction of the zoo. And, you also have the option of getting a fair bit of cardio on your way up.
