We visited the monument at night and again in the daytime. The wonderful fountain with the column and figure on top representing, I believe, Liberty. It was very impressive and we were surprised that there was no write-up about it in the Michelin Green Guide.

This is a very large expanse of a square that sits opposite the river and one which is quite empty apart from the sculptures and the column which sits at its head

From our hotel room near the station we could see a couple of fun fair rides, but we didn't realise until we got there that this huge square, one of the biggest in France, had been taken over by scores of sideshow rides and stalls....More

Lovely square and promenade to walk along. Very open unless there is an event happening on it. Great for strolling on a gritty surface.

While walking around Bordeaux and seeing all the amazing buildings we came across the monument just off the centre. The statue has numerous fountains and bronze statues that makes a wonderful sight.

Having seen the space with nothing on it and being very impressed it was interesting to visit again and see it occupied by a cycling show and display/competition course. This must be a site of commercial and social value to the city.

This is situated in t5he centre of Bordeux where all the buses and trams stop. A great photo opportunity and a lovely place to sit and eat (if the weather is good).

On a scorching hot August afternoon, the Esplanade offers masses of shade. Apparently the biggest open public space in Europe. So why nowhere to sit? Monument to the Girondins is spectacular.
