Visited the gallery today. Most was closed as new exhibits were being set up, maybe staggering set ups would be better for visitors. The Barbara Brown exhibit was good. The John Akonfrah exhibit was graphing filming of polar bears being shot and skinned. One whole...More

Superb collection, very well presented. The 19th Century English stuff, pre-Raphealite especially, was fascinating. This was the highlight of our visit to Manchester.

On my first ever trip to Manchester, I made sure I made time to visit The Whitworth after being recommended for the exhibits and the building itself. The gallery is easily reached from Manchester city centre using numerous bus routes which serve Oxford Road. This...More

This is a must-visit place. Since the refurb it is one of my favourite places to go, and to take people. It would not be out of place in any major city in the world, such is its grandeur from its Victorian front and its...More

We were in Manchester visiting our daughter who is in her first year at university. Looking for somewhere different to eat, we went into the beautifully designed Whitworth gallery building. Good choice. Handy lifts for me - I am disabled. The all day veggie breakfast...More

Visited on a dreaded sunny day, so had a walk around and in the Gallery. Lovely building: fab contrast between trad red brick and the glass extension and a beacon in the run-down, but improving park. Enjoyed the modern sculptures, though sad we missed the...More

So glad we got to see this exhibition, we really enjoyed it. Gallery was closing soon when we arrived and they were nice enough to let us in anyway! Didn't get a chance to get a proper look around the rest of the gallery, but...More

Where can I find a floorplan which tells me what is on display? Can't find one on the website. 'Search the collection' doesn't reveal what's on display and what isn't. I'll have 2 hours free in Manchester and want to see 18th & 19th century British art. The Whitworth reputedly has a lot, but is it on the walls? Reviews suggest not.

The Greenheys car park, just off Denmark Road, barely two blocks from the Whitworth, is lovely. £1/hour, with a parking attendant.
