A serene gem in the landscape

Walked to the Castle from Harrogate. Having not really researched the castle we weren’t sure what to expect. Wow! You can’t go into the castle, not only is it a private home it’s also a wedding and function venue. A fiver will get you into the extremely well kept grounds, it’s more than worth it. A fantastic lake with all manner of wildlife including a huge flock of geese. If you’re lucky (we weren’t) you might spot the deer that roam the grounds. Note to self: pack binoculars next time! It’s a beautiful meandering walk around the lake. Outside there’s a tea room for lunches or a takeaway coffee shop if you just want a snack or an ice cream, you don’t need to pay the entry fee to use these. There’s plenty of seating outside and reasonable toilets inside.
There are a few artisan shops in the castle precinct, the Harrogate gin shop proving to be particularly popular. Parking looked to be a bit of an issue and is clearly having a negative impact on the lovely little village, so best to cycle, walk or get a bus. A great day out.

Truly beautiful gardens
Aug 2021
We spent a lovely morning wandering through the parkland and woods, then through the gardens. Even chatted to the owner who was gardening, about the vegetable garden. Unfortunately the castle was closed when we visited, but the grounds alone make this a 'must see' for anyone in the area.

Fabulous few hours spent here in the grounds.

Visited with children a few days ago. The house was closed, although they were hosting a wedding on the day we visited. I only wanted to visit the grounds anyway so none of this was a problem. £5 entry for adults and children free made this an excellent value visit! The grounds are well kept with plenty of interesting places for children (and adults!) to explore.
There were lots of deer and cows on the other side of the lake to the house.
Different trails to do, including a tree faces trail.
A great little visit here!

Unfortunately the house was not open, but we had a really nice walk around the lake, followed by coffee and scones in the nicely appointed Tea rooms. It is well worth a visit.

A mixed bag

Paid full price only to discover walled gardens were closed. Went to cafe and served dry stale cake and overly strong tea ( no hot water). Having said that the walk around the grounds was lovely. But there are plenty of lovely free walks around this area.

My wife and I visited Ripley on Saturday 17th July which included the castle.
We had a nice breakfast at the tearooms and at about 10:20 am we had a walk around the castle grounds with a coffee and pastry from reception.

We attempted to drink our coffee and eat our pastry on the picnic tables inside the grounds but were told by a rather patronising lady that the tables were reserved for a wedding, but the notices had not been put out. We obliged and moved on.

We then went for a tour around the church next door, speaking to the helpful and polite staff who welcomed us inside while preparing for a wedding at 1:00 pm. I asked if this was the same wedding was going over to the Castle, it was.

So we were asked to vacate a picnic table when they weren’t going to be used for possibly four hours?

I believe it was pettiness, a show of authority and meanness and my complaint said that to the Ripley Castle management.

Family friendly visit ...
Jun 2021
This old country house resembles a fort, bang smack in the middle of this medieval Yorkshire village. Entry is only £5 for adults which is extremely cheap. They encourage families to visit and we saw lots of exciting things for kids to do as we wandered round the grounds.

The grounds are well kept, very formal and colourful when we visited. It impressed me they pay as much attention to maintaining the old buildings within the estate as they do keeping the boarders in tip top condition. The kitchen garden oozed variety of salad and veg crops.

A lovely place to visit if you’re in the area.

Attempted visit to gardens
Jun 2021
Arrived at 14:15 and found it was too late to get entry into gardens even though open until at least 4pm.
Castle still closed to visitors but looks interesting.
