Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were driving back up to Dublin from New Ross and needed a place to stop and stretch. This is such a random little ruin but when we pulled up and my boys saw it from the car park, the doors were open and they were running over there practically before I'd stopped the car! It is just a pile of rocks, really, but lots of scrambling to get over there and the views are so so lovely. There was a good placard there to help you imagine what it looked like back when it was new.

Glad we stopped! I will say, though, that there were a few moments when I was truly nervous about my son plummeting off the cliff :). If you have a little one that wanders, hold on tight, there isn't a fence or anything to stop you from falling :)

Lots of wonderful views and great ruins. Easy to get to and very walkable. If you're in Wicklow, it's a great place to take photos.

Easily missed, but absolutely beautiful. It is the definition of what you would imagine Ireland to be. Beautifully green, quaint village in the background, and historic castle ruins. It is bit steeper than it looks, but was doable with a toddler. Just extra caution needed.

Black Castle is a little piece of rock with castle ruins on the edge of Wicklow town facing out to see. It was used as a defensive post to protect Wicklow from outside invasion from the 12 Century onwards. While it is a relatively minor attraction of itself, it does lead on to one of the most beautiful costal walks in Co Wicklow.

But I wouldn't go out of my way to see the Black Castle ruins (calling them ruins is being generous). Okay call me uneducated or unsophisticated but then answer me this, if this is such a remarkable site, then why doesn't Wicklow replace the deteriorated and barely legible historical marker with something new and legible?

This is a great visit for a few hrs.... especially if your an outlander fan as it was used in some of the episodes. There is some greet photo opportunity’s as it very picturesque. There is lots of steps and the ground surface area can be uneven so you would need to be able bodied to get around. It is well worth a visit as it’s an amazing medieval castle with lots of history.

Like many castles in Ireland, little remains but a mound of rocks. The views are wonderful, and the little city is quaint (with little to do)---but if you can score a table at the Lighthouse Restaurant, it makes for a great evening.

Nice place, great view. Good to combine with a trip to Glendalough coming from Dublin. Because you reach Wicklow by M11, taking a step to Wicklow doesn't mean much more time than going directly Dublin-Glendalough or the other way round if you go by car. You can go for a swim in the sea near the castle if you want!

Though it is not a castle anymore, it is a very beautiful spot to see in Ireland.
While you’re in Wicklow, check out the prison museum too. It is small but full of history. Have lunch there, it is worth it.

These ruins are well worth seeing. We stopped for about two hours here, scrambling over the stony path to reach the very edge of the remains of the tower, then sitting on the grassy bank looking out over the sea. The tufts of thrift were in full bloom which gave everything quite a magical feel. An evocative site for dreamers!
