Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The abbey has a lovely location near the River Slaney .
It was a daughter house of Mellifont in County Louth . Baltinglass was in turn linked to Jerpoint in Co. Kilkenny . They think that the carvings in Baltinglass were a forerunner to the ones in Jerpoint .
The abbey was a Cistercian one. It was suppressed in the time of Henry the 8th.

It’s a shame that there was a Church of Ireland church built into the middle of the abbey . Stones from the abbey were used to build the COI presbytery.
There is a new Church of Ireland now , beside the abbey .The old little school building beside it is pretty too.

There’s a big pyramid shaped tomb which was the burial ground of the Stratford family . The Earl of Alderborough’s family name was Stradford. He founded Stratford on Slaney outside the town . It was an important industrial town. But was badly hit by the Great Famine .

There is a beautiful inscribed tombstone to a man called Grace fixed to the wall of the abbey .

Walk down a quiet lane along a river to see a fabulous religious ruin. It's free to enter and enjoy for as long as you want. There are some fabulous features in the site. Tombs, a tower, arches, a partial cloister, massive window frames. I visit many of these in Ireland and this is in the top 20.

Fantastic stop if travelling through Baltinglass. Ruins are impressive and there is a very informative description board at the entrance giving you some insight and history of the Abbey.

We visited here whilst visiting some other attractions in the area. The church next door is worth visiting too. Some free parking and some interesting artefacts

It has been about three years since we were last here, we forgot how beautiful these ruins are especially at sunset, (as per the piccies).

The site itself dates back to the 1100's with the current remaining church and cloister dated to the 1200's that is old in anyones book.

We love just walking around taking it all in, there was no one around during our visit, probably very busy on weekends.

Visited here along with a number of other classic car drivers. Well worth a visit to recover our history in the area. Well kept and clean with a nearby Church of Ireland church still in use.

When in the area this is a must, it can be seen from the n81, however a little difficult to find, as you come into town cross the bridge it is the very first left, the abbey is located at the end of the lane, you will have it all to your self, unless there is a funeral, it is amazing to see at sunset as per the piccies attached.

At one time Ireland was teaming with Cistercian Abbeys. Now it lies in ruins. Baltinglass was one of them. Built in the twelfth century out of granite that had to be hauled in, it is a sad commentary of a time when anything Catholic was razed to the ground. When you finish walking around the abbey, take a minute to tour the little village. It is a pretty special place.

My wife and I called here in November. It was a lovely day and we do love our old Abbey's and graveyards. This one didn't disappoint. First time here and would love to call again. Beautiful buildings with a church within a church. Unfortunately there was no access to the tower which would have given great views.

Baltinglass Abbey is one among the many ruins in Ireland, not spectacular, but worth a short visit if in the area; one can always learn something new.
