Yanny is an excellent teacher who knows her subject and materials backwards and also has the patience to be a good hardworking teacher giving everyone individual feedback and attention as required in a relaxed atmosphere. The whole class were delighted with their art weekend and outcome.

Abstract painting with Damien Flood
Jan 2020
I attended a two day abstract course with Damien Flood. It was my first time painting anything in 8 years so it was a bit daunting but It was fantastic. Damien's method of teaching was clear, informative and fun! He was very patient and gave everyone time one on one if we had any additional questions. I highly recommend and plan to do more courses in the future

Bairbre Duggan Workshops
Dec 2019
I attended a Portrait and Still Life workshop taught by artist Bairbre Duggan another top-notch artist, characteristic of the choices of teachers at the SchoolHouse for Art . I love her paintings so was delighted to get an opportunity to get some insight into how she works. She is a very generous teacher, she took pains to encourage the class to find their own strengths and passion in their art and offered guidance in that. At the same time she offered a wealth of knowledge in working with colour, the diverse qualities of paints and pigments, helping us to view and see differently and translate that onto the canvas. Bairbre adapted her teaching to all the levels of experience at the workshop, as well as excellent demos, she worked in depth with each of us. I came away feeling I had stretched myself, with kind encouragement and learned a lot about form, light and shade and particularly how, in working with a limited pallette the play of colour in a painting can create a unified and harmonious work. I'm full of enthusiasm to work with all I've learned.

A wonderful wood carving experience
Oct 2019
That we are living in a world saturated with screen based digital technologies where our sense of touch, of sight and of smell are often diminished to virtual experiences can be hard to even recognise. It is only when we are jolted through physical experience and active utilisation of our senses that we begin to appreciate their importance. I have recently been taken on a journey into the past with Conleth Gent and the Schoolhouse for art. A journey in touch with the visual majesty of forests, with the tactility of trees and with the gentle scent of fresh wood. The schoolhouse recently organised ‘The Big Chisel’ in which diverse and skilled wood carvers offered masterful performances in wood carving. A sort of alchemy was performed over three days during which old stumps were transformed into swans, people, totem poles, fish, birds, bug hotels and more. The carvers shared their knowledge and skills during a well-run weekend hosted by Neil Condren’s Schoolhouse for Art. I have been lucky enough to secure a place in Conleth Gent’s evening class in the SchoolHouse. His sculpture (begun during ‘The big Chisel’) of three figures holding a boat is under construction in front of the school house at the time of writing. Working with Conleth who has decades of experience in wood carving, is like apprenticing under a Renaissance Master-Craftsman. His passionate attention to the importance of knowing the materials, of understanding and of caring for tools inspires great admiration. Conleth shows not only a deep respect and understanding for his trade but this same care and attention is shared with his students. His gentle manner and good humour set the tone for a deeply enjoyable and enriching class where for 2 and a half hours each week, I get to travel back in time and enrich my senses with the humblest of materials engaged in one of the earliest means of communication. Wherever I meet a difficult turn, Conleth is on hand with his mallet to offer guidance and support… and a friendly word. Well done to the SchoolHouse and Conleth for offering experiential learning that leaves the screens outside!...If only for a couple of hours.

Workshop with Cuong Nguyen
Sep 2019
Having looked forward to this two-day workshop for months it didn’t disappoint.. in fact it far exceeded expectations! Cuong is a master with pastel pencils and an expert teacher, generously sharing his unique technique with patience and great good humor. The Schoolhouse for Art was the perfect venue.. an airy and light-filled creative space in the heart of scenic Enniskerry. Neil regularly hosts local and international artists and I look forward to the next workshop in the warm, welcoming and encouraging atmosphere of The Schoolhouse!
