Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Olivia who was working on the front desk asked if we wanted a tour. She gave us a most thorough history of the Coakley family history and the history of the Abbey. She walked with us through the Abbey and was a most delightful and knowledable host. She is a great historian and delivered a very interesting story.

Very interesting for an hour stopoff, but no cafe/tearoom. The nearby walled garden is worth a visit.

Visited not knowing any history of the area and our OPW tour guide Pilar was excellent on bringing us up to speed with so much fascinating knowledge. The woods and grounds of the abbey are stunningly beautiful and every nook in the woodlands has a skillful timber sculpture to admire. Highly recommend adding this to your things to do list.

The displays show the progress of the stabilization and restoration of this site. You can see the many changes and alterations done thru out the sites history. The POW has done a great job. The guides are very knowledgeable and can answer most of your questions. Definitely worth the visit.

A fine example of early Norman Christian architecture in Ireland built at the early stages of Ireland's conquest. The OPW etc. have put a lot of time and detail in both presenting and conserving Tintern Abbey. Held the attention of all three generations of our family when visiting. The grounds are extensive with brilliant woods that the kids spent a lot of time running about in. Whilst there a visit to the Colough gardens is an utter must.

Fantastic forest walks, history and a great pub to boot! Lots of work has been done here to improve the facilities and it hasn't been in vain. Recommend walking south along the estuary were you will come upon the little pub overlooking the sea.

I last visited about five years ago when I found the abbey was not open but the surrounding woods are worth a visit and of course there is the walled garden. This time I was taking people who were staying with me and we popped in (not a planned visit I admit) on the way home from a trip to the Hook (always wonderful) and was bitterly disappointed. Firstly, the 'road' from the first car park to the parking for the abbey must have been made by someone that repairs car suspension. Even if you stick to the 10kph limit it is almost undrivable. I don't understand how they can have laid it with so many ridges. Go slow. If you do go you need to do your homework first. Having paid 18 euro to enter (two were concessions) we did not have any leaflet to explain the place and there were no signs to explain the Abbey. There is an exhibition of women in Irish politics (I think) on three floors but no real signs to say why and the few 'screens' were either not working or had been removed. It may be very worthy and very interesting but why is it there? The cafe was not just closed but I don't know where it was. There were some steps down to below ground to a locked gate - why? Because I had been before and know there is a good view from the bridge we walked into the woods to get to it and discovered a coffee van - but there is no sign for this and the owner, who was the most helpful person there said the OPW would not let him put up signage. I was really disappointed. I will go back on my own to work out how to get the best of the place before taking more visitors. It is potentially a great place but the OPW need to make more effort and envisage how a paying visitor is treated and finds the place. Wexford is a beautiful county and has a lot going for it (I live in it) and 'Ireland's Ancient East' has potential to drag visitors away from 'The Atlantic Way' but this is not going to cut the mustard - not because the abbey is not worth seeing but because of the visitor experience. Now I just need to check my shock absorbers.

We began our tour with a guide (for about 15 minutes). She answered so many of our questions and provided wonderful information! Afterwards we walked through the Abbey (so impressed that they had a level of the Abbey highlighting women who had done so much for Ireland!!) and the grounds and garden! We would definitely recommend making this apart of your trip!

Simply breathtaking ! We loved the beauty and appreciated that they are preserving this magnificent place. You can freely walk around the grounds. The staff in the gift shop were helpful and gave a map of other points of interest to visit while we were in the area. If was a perfect day trip from Bath.
