About
The magnificent curved facade of the warm butter-coloured stone building draws in the visitor. The eye-catching giant sculpture on the gable was inspired by a tiny 13th century belt mount found in Waterford. It is Ireland’s only purpose-built medieval museum and the only building on the island to incorporate two medieval chambers, the 13th century Choristers’ Hall and the 15th century Mayor’s Wine Vault. Don't miss the stunning Heavens' Embroidered Cloths, Waterford's cloth-of-gold 15th century vestments, the only piece of clothing from King Henry VIII's reign to survive in the world - the 'Cap of Maintenance' and the Great Charter Roll from 1373, containing the earliest contemporary portrait of a medieval English king (Edward III) shown to Queen Elizabeth on her 2011 state visit to Ireland. These and many more unique artefacts await you on your guided tour of the award wining Medieval Museum.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The history of the Vikings in Ireland comes alive in the museum. Taking the time to walk through the museum and see all of the exhibits was very interesting.

Better signage as the layout is quite disorientating. A map of the museum might help. Also, more exhibits and less plaster models of no historic value.

This small museum has 3 levels. You first go downstairs through a tower replica to see the wine cellars of their most famous mayor. Then you should take the elevator to the 2nd floor.
Each floor has many informative panel, muck up miniatures of the town, a precious relic and a small projection room of a short documentary. I suggest you watch the movie first, to properly appreciate both relics.
In the upper floor, it’s a parchment manuscript of Waterford. In the lower floor it’s a collection of religious garments with gold thread embroideries, that went through an interesting ordeal.

The Medieval Museum is absolutely filled with the history of Waterford going back to the Vikings and later. There are so many displays of original items to view. The Heavenly Secret and the write up on that was most impressive.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and funny. He conveyed passion for the local history. He brought up challenging topics from history and shared how the population changed over time to be more accepting and supportive of people from other views and affiliations. He inspired us as he informed us!

I was initially put off by the name - I thought it was a museum of Medieval Treasures but it's a museum of Waterford Treasures & history, housed in a Medieval Museum.
It was very well laid out and presented the history of Waterford in an easy to understand way - I do love a good timeline!

We elected to do the multi-museum entrance package and I am glad that we did. This museum in particular was the best out of all that were included, but I don’t know that I would have separately paid 10 euro to tour this. The priest’s vestments and the translated annals of Waterford book were the most interesting to me. There was a variety of artifacts and each was explained well

Don’t miss this Museum if you’re in Waterford. The displays are really visitor- friendly and the Treasures are exactly that… treasures beyond price from Henry VIII hat to the magnificent charters.

Is it possible to gain access to the museum without having purchased advanced sale on line tickets? I would like to be able to decide whether or not to visit the museum when I am there? I don't know exactly what day or time I will be there

Hi guys, it certainly is, you can come to the award winning Medieval Museum or the beautiful Georgian Bishop's Palace at your own time and come in and purchase a ticket. A guided tour is included in the entry fee, or you can take the audio visual guide yourself at no extra cost. I hope that helps!

Will be visiting Waterford only for the day, and trying to see as much as we can while there. Approximately how long should we allow for the museum?
Waterford_Treasures

Hi Tazkatza, the tours take about 45 minutes, but allow an hour in your schedule to do each museum.
