About
The magnificent curved facade of the warm butter-coloured stone building draws in the visitor. The eye-catching giant sculpture on the gable was inspired by a tiny 13th century belt mount found in Waterford. It is Ireland’s only purpose-built medieval museum and the only building on the island to incorporate two medieval chambers, the 13th century Choristers’ Hall and the 15th century Mayor’s Wine Vault. Don't miss the stunning Heavens' Embroidered Cloths, Waterford's cloth-of-gold 15th century vestments, the only piece of clothing from King Henry VIII's reign to survive in the world - the 'Cap of Maintenance' and the Great Charter Roll from 1373, containing the earliest contemporary portrait of a medieval English king (Edward III) shown to Queen Elizabeth on her 2011 state visit to Ireland. These and many more unique artefacts await you on your guided tour of the award wining Medieval Museum.

Fascinating displays in a wonderful building
We bought the €15 ticket for all Triangle activities. What fantastic value. The museum was a fascinating and well presented tour through medieval Waterford. History, artefacts, Mayors and more. The building itself is fabulous from the spooky stone basement to the gracious staircase to the beautiful upstairs rooms. Star of the show are the gold vestments with the most incredible backstory. Make sure and watch the video....

    Interesting museums in Waterford
This was one of our stops on our road trip around Ireland. We are museum people (and not crystal people), so we opted for this over the crystal factory. The museums are interesting, and well done. We were easily able to do Time, Silver and Medieval in an afternoon without feeling overwhelmed. Good for all ages, especially the Medieval museum.

    amazing gold cope
there were many amazing exhibits in this museum with plenty of information, the most notable being the medieval cloth of gold. Helpful guides if you need them and lifts to take you to each floor. The museum is well laid out, the display of copes through the ages is stunning , culminating in the Cloth of gold which was hidden for over a century. Worthwhile listening to some of the videos is different 'theatres' at different stages to learn more information. We bought a freedom ticket from the Bishops palace which was good value to see 4 museums.

    A wonderful Museum visit
This is a stunning Museum with the information brilliantly and beautifully presented. If we were made welcome by the staff how much more so will the citizens of Waterford be made to feel when they enter the Museum and learn of Waterfords history. By chance we met the acting curator who showed us the Square Badge depicting the sign of John crucified by the Jews at P which led to a conversation about the Jewish community in Waterford.

    Interesting Museum
As we were in Waterford for several days, we bought a combined ticket for this museum and others in the town. It was an interesting museum with a good deal of information about the long history of Waterford from the Viking period through to the Middle Ages. There were also mediaeval statues and vestments on display. Definitely worth a visit.

We visited the medieval museum while we were in Waterford for the weekend. The museum was fantastic, there was so much to see and so much we didn’t know about Waterford. From the underground cellars, to the City walls to Vikings and Kings, From Wine importation to flint formation and ancient tapestry, cloaks and clothing. It was a fantastic day, that we will remember. Thanks

We were given a tour of the Medieval Museum by the curator Donnchadh, whose knowledge knew no bounds. The highlight for me was the 15th Century wine vault which can be hired for private events but equally impressive was the very end of the tour where we got to see the Heavens' Embroidered Cloths, Waterford's cloth-of-gold 15th-century vestments - hard to believe the level of detail. I loved all the old paintings of Waterford and trying to imagine what life was like in those early settlement days. We also did the Wake Museum which my parents adored reminiscing on times gone by, the Bishop's Palace (where we had gorgeous scones) and the King of the Vikings tour entering a replica 13th century Viking house which was fascinating. Finally we did a walking tour of the Viking Triangle with the excellent Liam on possibly the coldest day of 2023 but his enthusiasm and insight into the history of Waterford kept us all engaged. There is so much to see in this visitor experience that once is simply not enough to visit.

Me, my wife and our two kids (6 and 4) visited the museum whilst in Waterford.
We knew it would be a bit difficult with the kids, but the fella behind the counter said that there were animations for the kids to watch and that they would enjoy it.
Unfortunately the animations weren't really what kids would enjoy, as great as they were. Plus the heads on spikes probably isn't ideal for young kids to see, but thankfully ours didn't really register what it was.
The museum is really interesting and I would love to do it without the kids one time. The only thing I would say is that it doesn't flow very well.
You go down some fantastic spiral stairs that are hundreds of years old and end up in an underground area that looks amazing but has no information. We were advised to then get the lift to the top floor and basically work our way back down, but it's not really clear which direction we should walk to follow the timeline. Not the end of the world really but could be better.

I'll definitely return in the future to do it properly.

The museum has a fascinating collection of medieval relics and artifacts. Everyone there was extremely friendly and welcoming. The tour Jack took us on was extremely educational and was worth more than the price of admission!
