Description:

The magnificent curved facade of the warm butter-coloured stone building...

The magnificent curved facade of the warm butter-coloured stone building draws in the visitor. The eye-catching giant sculpture on the gable was inspired by a tiny 13th century belt mount found in Waterford. It is Ireland’s only purpose-built medieval museum and the only building on the island to incorporate two medieval chambers, the 13th century Choristers’ Hall and the 15th century Mayor’s Wine Vault.

Don't miss the stunning Heavens' Embroidered Cloths, Waterford's cloth-of-gold 15th century vestments, the only piece of clothing from King Henry VIII's reign to survive in the world - the 'Cap of Maintenance' and the Great Charter Roll from 1373, containing the earliest contemporary portrait of a medieval English king (Edward III) shown to Queen Elizabeth on her 2011 state visit to Ireland. These and many more unique artefacts await you on your guided tour of the award wining Medieval Museum.

What a treasure! Do not come to Waterford for just the crystal! The museum is wonderful. If you can get the walking tour, the curator Richie was wonderful. Fabulous history! The medieval high mass garments were amazing.

This is what a museum should be. Lots of well informed guides, good models, multimedia presentations and to top it all an ancient scroll to link Waterford and England's Royalty. We rushed around it too quickly so we could get back on our coach on time.

In my opinion, this is the only thing worth seeing in Waterford. The rest is a let down. This museum is really well done though.

This museum is laid out over several floors with each floor having a different theme. It is very tastefully done and of interest to adults and children alike. Highly recommended.

Absolutely absorbing to have such history on my own doorstep. The amount of artefact's is truly unbelievable, it was amazing the experience. I was there through work, which is with the Irish Wheelchair Association, the members were bowled over with the whole experience. I think if you visit on Wednesday and Sunday it is free admission. Truly wonderful 10 out of... More

Our first visit to this excellent museum which explores the city of Waterford's medieval history. Much of this is documentary, with a large number of manuscripts dating from about 1200-1700, many with seals still intact. These are summarised in accompanying information panels as, even if you know the language, the ornate handwriting is difficult to decypher. The museum is in... More

I was in the city with the better half, she went shopping so I decided to have a look around. Spotted the Medieval Museum and went in for a visit. Wow what an interesting place takes you back to olden times, found it really informative and would recommend it as a place to see.

If you get the chance, go visit this museum. It has many priceless artifacts from the medieval era. It's very impressive! Even though it's smaller than the history museum of Dublin, it's so much better. Richard, our guide, has the gift of storytelling and gave us the perspective of how those times must have been for the citizens of Waterford.... More
