- Pauline M6 contributionsVisit to Cahir CastleVisited this lovely castle on Friday 13th October. Richard, the OPW staff member in the office was very helpful when I first enquired about a castle visit and Hazel our guide made the visit really intersting. She brought the castle's history to life with her concise commentary. It was a most memorable experience.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 15 October 2023
- Deisy CSan Diego, California24 contributionsBig and full of historyReally beautiful well preserved castle. Also really big. Came in a taxi from Cork, but you can take the train and bus here. Tour took two hours . We took the bus to Cashel and can make rock of Cashel same day if you want. Nice little town around to have a pint.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 November 2023
- Diane FCarlisle, Pennsylvania7 contributionsBeautiful Irish CastleThis castle is a real treasure. We had a wonderful guide who brought the place alive for us. The castle was in the hands of the same family until the 1930s so it has a rich available wealth of stories. The grounds are very peaceful and beautiful. I highly recommend a visit!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 December 2023

- amanda5805Duncan, Canada7,338 contributionsMust See Excalibur CastleCahir Castle is located in County Tipperary, is a captivating piece of history. Dating back to the 13th century, it has seen its share of battles and historic events. Movie buffs might recognize it from films like "Excalibur," where its impressive architecture added to the drama. Exploring Cahir Castle is like taking a step back in time, offering a unique window into Ireland's medieval past.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 April 2024
- Julie H8 contributionsNice and quickCool castle very intact. Your free to roam around. Look up to the right when you come thru the door after paying. You'll see a cannon ball stuck in the wall from a battle and one on the outside wall by the street.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 April 2024
- TignishTraveller99 contributionsA great place to visitWe stopped in to visit as part of a tour group from Canada. Bernadette was a gem of a tour guide. She brought the building to life and had everyone waiting to hear what tidbits she was about to tell next. A building with a lot of history in a cute little town. I would recommend stopping in.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 June 2024

- AlbertSalichsManresa, Spain22,459 contributionsVery nice Middle-Ages castleCahir Castle is an old castle located in the centre of Cahir, a little town in Tipperary Region, in Ireland. It is a Middle-Ages castle, which is very well preserved. In fact, you can go inside and visit it. You can see some rooms, the inner courtyard and go to the main tower to see very nice views of the surroundings. Very interesting visit, which you can do with the heritage card of Ireland. My sons ages 16, 9 and 9 RAVED about this castle when we were finished visiting. They loved that we could explore at our own pace and that it looked so much like what they'd imagined a castle to be. Don't miss the stairs that lead to a dungeon cell and then climb up super steep to a battlement that you can stand on and look out over the city - that was their favorite!

We came here in July with a group, we were initially met at the front desk by a older gentleman in glasses, even though we had booked in advance he grumbled that it was expected to be a busy day of tourists so he wasn't certain our group could be accommodated. Not the most welcoming atmosphere when visiting a national heritage property.
However things quickly improved when we were met by our friendly guide Tadhg (think this was his name - tall, young man with glasses), whose enthusiasm for the history of the castle and the era really shone through - he was incredibly well informed and explained aspects of the architecture to our group in a clear and concise manner. He was an amazing ambassador for the castle, and OPW, I'm sure he'd make an excellent curator. Though the Norman period isn't my favoured historical period his tour really had us all listening intently.
Definitely a must visit, and has recently been the backdrop for many historical period films. We recommend visiting alongside the Swiss Cottage nearby.

We had a brilliant afternoon visiting the beautiful Cahir Castle. We did a combination of self guided exploration as well as a guided tour. That's the beauty of the place, as if you arrive early you can explore away yourself before and after the guided tour which took about 50 minutes. The guide was very good, clearly loved the place and it's history abd told us do much we'd never have learned exploring in our own.
Incredibly well preserved Castle with loads of nooks and crannies to explore. The Banquet Hall is beatiful and you can go into thd Keep itself and climb the narrow stairs to get good views of the castke walls and the river below.
There are exhibitions on the 1916 Rising and the 1919-21 War of Independence. There is an interactive model of the castle with lights telling the story of the siege and the fall of the castle back in the day.The short film included is well worth watching.
There are stairs down to the dungeons and under the walls to a viewing platform.
The battlements are really striking, as is the magnificent portcullis.
All in all, an absolute gem of a place to visit, fantastic.

I visited with my wife and three young children today. Under 12s go free so it only cost us 5 Euro per adult which was excellent value. There was a short tour at the start with a pleasant and knowledgeable guide, then we had the rest of the time to explore ourselves. We spent about an hour there and could easily have spent longer but our 2 year old decided it was lunch time.

Cahir Castle is very large and very well preserved. The tickets are inexpensive, and since they are all-day tickets you don't feel rushed. There is a car park directly beside the castle, though do mind the ducks and geese as they wander through. We were the only people visiting the castle, and we were able to wander around for the better part of an hour. There are certain staircases that may be difficult for young children or the elderly, typical of most old castles. I did enjoy the diorama that explained how the English took the castle. At the top of the tower, there is a lovely view of the river, with the viaduct and walking path in the distance. After touring the castle we wandered the streets of Cahir and walked the path along the River Suir. It was a very delightful afternoon.

We stumbled across this castle while on our way through the area. It was the best example of a medieval castle we have visited so far on our tour of Ireland. There are guided tours, but none were available during our visit. However, for E 0.50 you can purchase a guide that provides a good explanation of what you are seeing.

This castle was built in the 13th century and once was the stronghold of the Butler family. In 1599 the walls fell for the first time as heavy artillery was used against it. It is also one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles.
I just walked inside and bought my ticket right then and there, which did cost 5 € for adults. After the entrance room you head outside where you can then walk left towards the book shop and the audio visual theatre.
If you head right, then you head up some stairs and then you head turn right again, entering an exhibition about women in medieval Ireland. There’s also another exhibition featuring a model of the 1599 siege.
Walking further, you then reach the banqueting hall with its fireplace. From here on, you can walk up narrow stairs and reach two more rooms. From the courtyard with the two canons, you can descend down the stairs before you head up a narrow staircase and reach quite a nice viewpoint.
I sadly did not have a lot of time to visit this castle, but if you’re interested in old castles, this one’s quite interesting. It’s also really worth a visit for movie fans, as Cahir Castle has been used for filming many times. Maybe you can spot some places from your favourite shows and movies, from Excalibur to The Tudors.

A stunning castle which probably didn't look that much different in Medieval times. It is no wonder this place has been used for quite a few films!
Right by the river in the centre of the village, there is a large public car park adjacent. Inside the rooms are laid out to recreate the interiors of former times with original exhibits. There is even a working portcullis!
Inside one of the courtyards, there is a beautiful seventeenth century manor house - which is not open to the public - but a view of the outside was a pleasure.
There were no crowds when I went, and most of the rooms I had to myself. It was June, so the outside of the castle was framed by lovely spring flowers which continued to a public park behind.
There are toilets at the castle and eating places nearby in the village.

We wandered in to the castle during a visit to the town on a lovely August afternoon. As we walked round the castle, we met Mick, one of the OPW personnel on site. He couldn't have been more friendly or informative and gave us a superb 45minute tour that covered the story of the castle and its place in history. Thanks again Mick. We would strongly recommend a visit.

Beautifully maintained castle and grounds. Definitely go on the guided tour for insight into the history and import of this seemingly impregnable fortress. The lighted diorama is useful for explaining the attack and siege of Cahir by the forces of the Earl of Essex in the Elizabethan Age. Going up the spiral staircases with "stumble steps" may be problematic- the place is not handicapped accessible.
