small and beautiful

I have been in several times when staying in town and they always have interesting and thought provoking exhibitions on. The curator deserves a pat on the back as a small exhibition space appears to expand to contain some wonderful and often very contemporary art.

When I visited the art on display did not appeal much. However the Yeats Exhibition was wonderful and the films (we watched two) drew Yeats and Sligo together, and enhanced the experience of being there. The material did not shy away from the disturbing aspects of Yeats which was refreshing in its honesty. It was clear that Sligo loves Yeats, warts and all.

Charming little museum with wonderful things inside

Tiny little museum tucked away inside a lovely old building - but it's full of fascinating objects from the area.

While spending a couple of weeks in County Donegal, Ireland, my husband and I took a day trip south to Sligo, the home of W.B.Yeats and his brother Jack Yeats. I knew of W.B.Yeats and had read some of his poetry, but had no idea his brother was a talented artist' We visited the local art gallery, which turned out to be a precious part of our Irish experience! The gallery is public and FREE and run by the citizens of Sligo itself. Situated in the center of town and built as a modern addition to a school, the gallery was a unique and fabulous experience. The art was interesting and beautifully reflected the local scene. In addition to the permanent collection, we viewed another interesting and fun show. One of the best features of this gallery was the joy, pride and enthusiasm of the local people -- all volunteers!
