Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Hiking Benbulben was something we wanted to do during our Ireland stay. It was worth the time and effort. If you are planning to hike to the top, I would recommend staying at the Benbulben Farmhouse B&B as they have private access to the mountain right from their location. It was an affordable accommodation with great breakfast. The views from the top are stunning - even on a cloudy day. Your shoes and socks will most likely be soaked by the time you are done, so plan accordingly. It took us about 3 hours to go up and back down. We didn’t spend a lot of time at the top though.

After reading up on the local area we left our hotel in Sligo and found the car park for the forest walks with no problem, not many cars as there was low cloud and not much to see, we opted for a walk through the forest which was easy going. Next day the weather had improved and we decided to revisit, the views are spectacular over the bay and Ben Bulbin itself. This time we opted for the Blue route which took us along the bottom of the mountain, around the edge of the forest and back along the same path we had taken the previous day. Well worth the visit, better on a sunny day but still impressive when the weather is overcast

We thoroughly enjoyed this 3.8 mile /6.1 km walk though there were more inclines than some reviews suggested. Not very steep but something to mention if anyone has mobility issues. The paths are in good condition and level from side to side, so no need for "Haggis walking"
Great variety of views, as always remember to check behind you every so often, sometimes the view backwards is noteworthy too.
We got a great day for our walk though it was the second week of October.
The free car park can be found on Google maps by adding "Benbulben Walk" There's a coach park also, lots of spaces in the car park.

Spectacular views of Benbulben that are taken in on a fairly easy trail. There are some changes in elevation that can pose a challenge for walkers who are not used to a bit of a climb. Unfortunately, our visit yesterday was tainted by clouds of flying ants that landed all over us throughout the walk, making it impossible to stop and enjoy the scenery. We spent much of the time trying to swat them away and off of our clothes.

Absolutely beautiful mountain in a stunning part of Ireland. Well worth the trip - the whole family were in awe. When we arrived, the Mountain had a ‘tablecloth’ on that made it quite a magical sight. For the four hours we were walking in the area, the tablecloth disappeared and was replaced with lovely blue sky so we could see Benbulbin in all its glory - absolutely beautiful 😍

We completed the Benbulben Forest walk and while initially we tought we were going to go up the mountain, we quickly discovered this was 'just' a forest walk. Beautiful views and lovely 6+km walk and overall great day. We will have to plan better to get to the top next time, Sligo has so much to offer this will be the first of many trips to the county, loved it.

The GPS took us directly to Lucks bridge and parked on the small space available. It can only accommodate around 8 cars. We walked up the road to the second smaller bridge where the road becomes a dirt track. There is no signage to tell you which track to take for the hike up the gully side so we took the straight track until it ends and then continued over the bog tracks. The soft boggy part is short so find the best way around it. The track on the left side of the gully will be visible and it’s a moderate gradual climb up. Don’t forget to stop and enjoy the view as you go along. And the sheep along the way. Once you reach the top, you can continue to the other end for more spectacular views. Look out for holes and dips and it can be very windy in some parts. The walk along the top will take around 30 minutes. You will get wonderful views of Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo. Highly recommended. No bathroom facilities available.

I walked this with 4 kids aged 10-13. Easy terrain. Signposted red or blue trail. Small carpark, and rd up to it extremely busy & lacking space due to people parking on rd. When red trail finishes, no sign back through forest to return to car park. We made the mistake of following blue trail back onto Sligo rd...very dangerous. Sligo co co are in the process of sorting signage, which is good. Stunning scenery. Well worth a trip. An hr, well spent.

I’m not a hiker or a walker so I only went up the path a short way. But I was able to see a small piece of the beauty of Benbulben. The walk isn’t really for older people until they are in great shape. My mom started to do it but quickly turned back. We aren’t used to even small hills in Florida! There is a upper car park and a lower one but the upper was closed when we were there. If you’re looking for just a picture of the entire mountain, you can get it further away from off the highway. But if you have the ability to do the walk, try it.

Start the walk at Luke’s Bridge, this is a most beautiful hike with the most magnificent views of Yeats county. Take some time and maybe recite one of Yeats poems as we did. Highly recommend this walk. Make sure you have proper hiking gear, food, water, map and compass or you can take a guided walk. Either way you still need the proper gear.

Hi Nancy, you have had your holiday by now I think, sorry! I have been there a few times but I think the best is from the road to/from Mullaghmore.

Depends if you just want a good view, 15 min, plus time to get to a good spot. Or if you want to hike up it. Which probably takes at least a couple hours to go up and back down. I like the view from around the area of Grange and traveling north on the N15, probably until about half way to Cliffony. Then the angle changes and it's not as specatular (to my mind, anyway)

Is there a possibilty to get to Benbulben by public transport?
Cheers

You can take a bus to Drumcliffe, then 45 minute walk or short cab ride. The Sligo area is very possible to do without a car; we cancelled our rental.

We are a group of non walkers or hikers. Will we be able to see ben Bulben just driving on the road and if so where? We will be travelling from Westport to Sligo and then on to Donegal Town.
Written 27 August 2017
Yes you will be able to see Ben Bulben from the main road as you drive northwest out of Sligo on the Donegal Road. On a good day it is beautiful. The scenery around Sligo is just breath taking.
