Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were nearby so decided to pop in. It is a lovely castle but it was locked up when we got here (3pm on a Monday afternoon) with no indication of opening hours. We wandered round the walls for five minutes and then left. If you are in the area and like castles, it is worth a visit but I wouldn’t travel far!

Built in 1300, by Richard de Burgo, the Red Earl of Ulster. The entrance is opposite the Ballymote train station, on the R296, ( I missed the turn, I parked at the Church of the Immaculate Conception parking lot, left a note on my windshield), be careful entering back onto the roadway.

We stumbled upon this place and loved it! What a huge old castle ruin.

Easy to park and walk around.

We had trouble finding this, and couldn't get inside, but walking around was worth the time. It was hard to learn a lot about it from the limited signage, but we were amazed at how large the site is. Maybe it opens at times, I'm not sure, but even walking the grounds was interesting. There seems to be walking paths leading from the grounds, but we didn't have time to explore those.

Such a fantastic historical castle! Highly recommend seeing this ruin! There is so much history there! Its a little difficult to see from the road, but if you put in the address for the elderly home that is right next door to it then you will be able to find it.

Personally the castle was quite underwhelming and there are far better ruins to go to. I think some of the balconies should be open to visitors. The nursing home next door was far more exciting.

First time in Ireland and we landed in Balkymote, which is a gorgeous little village in County Sligo. This castle was build in the 1400's, it's a beautiful structure surrounded by a park. If you walk further you can visit the beautiful abbey and a park with a miniature railway line. This is a very interesting and historic location which more visitors need to experience

This was not too far off our path so we drove in to see it. We were surprised that the town has turned the grounds into a park, complete with walking trail around the property, picnic benches, etc. It seems that many towns in Ireland have handled their own particular ruin in differing ways.... We saw one placard (rather algae covered, so a little hard to read) that told about the castle. It looks like the town uses the grounds for gatherings throughout the year. There is a VERY interesting private home right next door that has incorporated some castle-like architecture into its design. I have never seen anything quite like it!
