A site of huge historical importance....but whilst the location is impressive the actual earthworks a far more impressive on aerial photos than they are the walk around/over. Visitor centre currently closed but some informative signboards at the entrance.

This was our 4th stop of 5 on a 130 km tour north of Dublin finding the site parking lot full with a bus and numerous cars along the narrow rural road. After finally parking, we passed a few information signs walking to the closed 1882 church visitor center, then skirted the cemetery wall to enter the grassy site of mounded earth. Noteworthy was the 3200 BC "Mound of the Hostages," the Royal Seat "Lia Fail" Standing Stone and the great hilltop views. Really nice gift shop and active cafe with clean restrooms.

Its nicely laid out with signs and an in-depth historical background about the site. It was wonderful to see the ancient passage tomb and the etchings on the wall. The views from the seat of the High Kings are one of the best I've seen. I'm pleased I visited the site, however I wish I could say the same for the shop and restaurant. We were seated and then had to wait 20 minutes before our order was taken. When they took the order, it was another 30 minutes before our food arrived. While I waited for the food, I visited the shop and chose a few books. Once again I waited for a cashier but when nobody arrived, I left without buying the books. Its a poor representation for visiting tourists, a few of whom I noticed at a nearby table shaking their head in exasperation.

The Visitor's center in the church is currently closed, but there was a small coffee shop near the parking lot, where we purchased a small guide book for a very small fee. The walk up to the site was nice, and the views were astounding. So much history packed into one spot - and walking amongst the hills was totally surreal. Worth a visit even if just for the views (on a clear day). 100% recommended, especially if you know the history of the place. Wish the visitor's center had been open.

Great ambience, we were there on a gray and windy day as it often is. Tara is a wonderful place to actually get a feel for history and think about the countless generations who have come before.

An amazing site loaded with history!
High kings crowned here, passage tomb located here, and the site of a battle from the 1798 United Irishmen Rebellion!
It's said that you can see 23 of Ireland's counties from here, I don't know about that, but the view was amazing!
Parking can be a little tough to find on a busy day though.

Visited Hill of Tara, Co. Meath yesterday, 28th July with Bespoke bills and treks
Our guide was Paul Quinn and we spent a very enjoyable 2.5 hours in his company
This site contains contains the largest complex of Celtic monuments in Europe
142 high kings of Ireland were coordinated here
Paul Quinn unique descriptions of the stories and history of the site, fired up our imagination and we could nearly visualize it
Afterwards as a bonus, he brought us along to the nearby Bective Abbey, the second Cisterican Abbey founded in 1147, which includes a 13th century church, a 15th century
Cloister and a 16th century tower. A visit not to be missed

nice day out and a legend to boot......you can park easily and there is no admission fee. you walk around the back of the church to find the site which is underwhelming on it own but put into context is still worth a visit

Myself and my husband visited the hill of Tara recently and loved our visit. The visitors center was closed due to restrictions but the site is steeped in history and the views were beautiful.
