I booked a day with Michael Fox, Boyne Valley Tours, to visit Newgrange and the Boyne Valley. It was the best day in Ireland and I feel we got more than our money’s worth. The excursion went smoothly and easily, from pick-up at our Dublin hotel to return. Michael, who is very easy to be with, oriented us for our visit of the Passage Tombs and showed us the myriad places of interest in the Boyne Valley. Everyone we met seemed to know and hold Michael in high regard. My husband and I feel very lucky to have found Michael’s Boyne Valley Tours and booked him for a day. I doubt anyone knows the Boyne Valley better than Michael. We recommend him highly!

We had a one day layover in Dublin at the end of a two week trip to Ireland and Scotland. My husband and I were traveling with our two boys, ages 11 and 9. By this point in the trip my boys were completely bored and exhausted with any sort of guided tour. They just wanted to run and climb. Michael took this into account, asked about other experiences we had enjoyed during our trip and coordinated the perfect day. Throughout the day he answered our multitude of questions about Ireland and the sites we were visiting. He had incredibly interesting information about the region and the traditions. He was flexible, patient and engaging. He picked us up from the airport. Our first stop was the seaside at the Boyne river emptying spot into the ocean. My kids got to run and skip rocks. Next stop were the ancient Celtic crosses and then on to the Hill of Slane (where St. Patrick began his ministry in Ireland). There are spectacular ruins there including one that the boys were able to climb and explore. After sufficient expenditure of boy energy, there was a stop for lunch and whiskey at Slane Castle before we headed to the main attraction at Newgrange and Knowth. (important note- you must book your tickets ahead of time for this, it is not included. If you are going to be doing multiple things in Ireland, investigate the Heritage Card. It easily paid for itself during our trip and this is one of the included sites with the card). The sites at Knowth and Newgrange were incredibly powerful (even my boys were engaged and agreed that being in one of the oldest known man made structures on Earth was "cool.") Michael then dropped us at our hotel at the end of the day. After a two week international trip with multiple stops, my whole family was exhausted. Michael made our last day incredibly enjoyable, easy and smooth. He was an absolute pleasure and I cannot recommend him highly enough.

We really enjoyed the trip through the countryside on the way to Newgrange and Dowth – the UNICEF sight is spectacular. Other stops included Hill of Slane (and history related thereto), Slane Castle, Mainistir Bhuithe area (especially enjoyed the old stone Celtic crosses and the Monasterboice Round Tower), Mellifont Abbey ruins, and our visit to the Battle of Boyne visitor center and gardens. He even made a quick stop at St. Peters Church in Drogheda to see a very interesting relic of Saint Oliver Plunkett. Michael Fox provided great historical insights everywhere we went – enjoyable, very knowledgeable, and full of personal experiences in area (he and family live there) – willing to answer all our questions and tailor the day to fit our interests (history, old churches and the Irish country side) – in all, one of our best days in Ireland.

Michael from Boyne Valley Tours is truly in a class of his own. I have never had a guide go to such lengths to make a custom tour fit our requests so exactly! In addition to perfect activities and sites, Michael is very pleasant and full of knowledge of the area. It was more like we were being shown around by a friend than by a hired guide. Yes, this area of the country is beautiful, and you will probably enjoy seeing it however you get there. Boyne Valley Tours, though, takes everything to the next level, shows you sites you would never see on your own (which also means fewer crowds) and gives the perfect amount of commentary to help you appreciate the area you are visiting. I will be forever grateful for helping make this special trip even more extraordinary. The day we spent on this tour will never be forgotten. (So, stop reading reviews and just book this tour!!)

This was a special trip for my mother-in-law to visit Ireland and see where her ancestors emigrated from. Michael picked us up from the airport right on time and drove us around the Boyne Valley, stopping at the Hill of Tara, Hill of Slane, and Knowth and Newgrange. He was very knowledgable on the local area. After the tour he dropped us off at our hotel in Dublin. This was one of the best days of our trip! I would definitely hire Michael again!
