Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Main thing to watch out for on Claire Island is uninsured drivers, of all ages. With thousands of staycationers, this isn't a place to get away from anything. The car park at Roonagh pier is overflowing, with cars cramming the approach road and a local farmer charging for his field, also uninsured. The ferry staff do their best but I can't heplp thinking this is the nxt COVID hub.

Excellent trip over to the island. Crew were all really friendly and helpful. Choice of sitting inside or on deck outside - the whole family decided to stay outside both ways even though it rained on the way back!! Great trip and highly recommended.

A very good experience. Lovely crew. I use a walking stick but with their help I had no problem boarding. Ferry left right on time. It was a lovely day so we sat outside but there is an indoor area if weather is inclement.
Clare Island is unbelievably lovely.

We had a lovely boat trip to Clare Island. The day was good and the sea was calm. We walked around the island and visited the community centre. Time was limited with us as we didn't want to do too much walking, sparing ourselves for Croagh Patrick the following day.

Getting out to Clare Island gives one the opportunity to see island life not far from the way it was long ago. The historical trail includes Grace O'Malley's castle right on the harbour and the Abbey where she is reported to be buried. The frescoes on the walls and ceiling are just spectacular....just be sure to know how to get the key (from the cottage across the road) if it is locked when you get there.
Travelling the island by walking or bicycling is the way to go, but there are taxis available for those who might find the walk more arduous. The views are spectacular and the farms are very interesting to study. There is a lovely cafe about half way up to the lighthouse and a wonderful shop for local woolen craft. The lighthouse is picturesque though now privately owned.
Perhaps one of the most fascinating things about Clare Island is the survey. The first survey conducted in the early 1900s cataloged all the species on the island. Now, it serves as a basis for studying climate change for the benefit of all of Europe.
I cannot wait until the Greenway is finished all around Clew Bay so that it becomes possible to cycle to Achill, take the ferry to Clare Island, cycle the island, and then return to Louisburgh. One day...

Very helpful and friendly stuff! From Westport (adventure Hub at James Street) they offer a shuttle bus to the pier! As im travelling without a car it was a great offer!
The boat ride offers already nice view over clew bay, croagh patrick, clare island and the whole coastline of the main land. If you like to walk/hike i def can recommend to go to clare island! I specially enjoyed climbing up to knockmore! Nice view over clew bay and achill! Quite steep though!

we took a ferry to Clare Island, the ferry cost us 50.00 Euro for two adults and one child. there was nothing to do on the island. we couldn't hire bikes because they hadn't got anything for her size no bike no carrier.. they offered to give us a tour for 50.00 Euro. this was a costly experience at 100.00 Euro just to see a run down neglected island. we were let off at a gift shop..such a rip off for a scarf a 160 euros. the only good was the weather was nice. the local people don't seem interested in having tourists or cleaning up their island...This is one I will never go and see again!!

Very small and uncomfortable ferry. Old and grubby looking with unfriendly staff. I thought it was going to go under as it was swinging from side to side, felt like I was in a washing machine

A sturdy ferry. Has what is necessary and the staff are very competant and I did find them friendly. They were helpful with children/dogs etc. Trip only takes 20 mins or so and is the main form of transport for the islanders. Frequent and not very expensive. Can be a nice day out but get the weather forecast first.

Is there any where to eat at the pier? As we will have a wait of an hour or so before getting the 5.30pm ferry to Clare Island
Written 5 June 2018
Hi, There is no food or drink facilities at Roonagh so we would advise you stop off in Westport or Louisburgh for something to eat.

What is the address of the area of embarkation?
Thank you.
Written 18 September 2016
Hi, There is no street address, but it is at Roonagh Pier. There are signs to Roonagh from Westport and also coming from south of Roonagh. Just google it and you will see it on a map. It is a bit out in the country.

Where is the area where we embark and can we get there via public transport? Are there seats (this is necessary)?
Thank you.

Hi, The pier is about 30 min. From Westport. It is rather remote and, to my knowledge there is no public transport. You could probably get a cab. There were a limited number of seats on the ferry. You mention seats are necessary so I should warn you that if there is a mobility issue the stairs down to the boarding ramp might be a little bit of a challenge.
