Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Visited Clare Island with some friends-first major disappointment was there was no parking spaces had to leave the car on side of the road and a very long walk to the ferry-one of our group had a recent surgery so was not atall pleasant-sadly Clare island was a disappointment/have been before but now after taking in the amazing sights and walks there was only one place to have food or refreshments.

Ferry experience from Roonagh to Clare Island and back was great. Clare Island Ferries was very flexible when we asked to move our reservation to another day due to weather forecast changes.

Excellent trip over to the island. Crew were all really friendly and helpful. Choice of sitting inside or on deck outside - the whole family decided to stay outside both ways even though it rained on the way back!! Great trip and highly recommended.

Top class service from Brian and his crew. A group of 18 cyclists made the trip to Clare Island and they couldn’t have been more helpful. Brian even gave a lift to one of our injured cyclists from Roonagh to Westport. What a gent! Couldn’t recommend highly enough.

Ferry arrived on time, friendly service, highly recommend.
The island itself is stunning. I was only going to review the ferry but I read the previous review which was about the island & felt I should review as my experience was entirely different. We were on the island the Sunday of the Connacht Final between Mayo & Galway so the island was busy but not with "thousands " of people, I fail to see how thousands could even be on the island considering the ferry can only bring over max about 30 & I believe the ferry ran twice that
day.
Our first stop was at The Achill Island Oven a newly opened coffee hut, we had coffee & homemade pastries. We unfortunately didn't bring our bikes but it was a beautiful day to walk, we walked as far as the local shop, bought ice creams & chatted to a local elderly lady who advised us where to go for the best view. We stopped at the Abbey & then continued on as directed to a trail that crossed the mountain (stunning views along the way) and back to our starting point. We had lunch at the community centre, great atmosphere for the match. The kids played at the playground for a while, which looks very new. The Island is stunning, gorgeous scenery & so rural & peaceful. I would love to return & stay overnight, I'd say the craic would be great. As for uninsured drivers, any drivers that passed us were most likely locals, they weren't speeding & if anything they slowed down when passing walkers & gave a big smile & wave. Awesome place.

Main thing to watch out for on Claire Island is uninsured drivers, of all ages. With thousands of staycationers, this isn't a place to get away from anything. The car park at Roonagh pier is overflowing, with cars cramming the approach road and a local farmer charging for his field, also uninsured. The ferry staff do their best but I can't heplp thinking this is the nxt COVID hub.

Took the fast boat over to Clare Island on a beautiful sunny day.
Was well looked after on the boat, the crew took on bikes for us and secured them. All passengers had to wear face masks and seating was arranged for distance.

The boat trip lasts about 10 minutes. Both legs of the return trip left on time and the crew were friendly and helpful both times.

Hi. The ferry crossing from Roonagh to Clare Island takes 15 to 20 minutes on board out 96 passenger ferry the Clew Bay Queen. You can purchase your tickets from our web site at a discount fare or email me to pre book them.

Is there any where to eat at the pier? As we will have a wait of an hour or so before getting the 5.30pm ferry to Clare Island

Hi, There is no food or drink facilities at Roonagh so we would advise you stop off in Westport or Louisburgh for something to eat.
Would the crossing be suitable for three young kids?

Yes the ferry crossing is safe for children on board Clare Island Ferry Company's vessels. Just ask for the O'Gradys.

What is the address of the area of embarkation?
Thank you.

Hi, There is no street address, but it is at Roonagh Pier. There are signs to Roonagh from Westport and also coming from south of Roonagh. Just google it and you will see it on a map. It is a bit out in the country.

Where is the area where we embark and can we get there via public transport? Are there seats (this is necessary)?
Thank you.

Hi, The pier is about 30 min. From Westport. It is rather remote and, to my knowledge there is no public transport. You could probably get a cab. There were a limited number of seats on the ferry. You mention seats are necessary so I should warn you that if there is a mobility issue the stairs down to the boarding ramp might be a little bit of a challenge.
