We were in Limerick for the first time for only two days, and decided from reading previous reviews on TripAdvisor that a walking tour with ‘LimerickGuide’, soon after our arrival, would seem to be an ideal start to our visit. But we didn’t expect to be so thoroughly entertained as well as fully informed of the history of the city starting with the period of the Viking invasions in the 9th century onwards, through the 17th century battles with ‘King Billy’ and the twentieth century ‘Troubles’, to the present day. Despite Declan having patiently answered all our questions during the walk, we thought of others once back home, and he, good-naturedly and in great detail, replied to our e-mail.

We had opted for the Mediaeval Quarter tour, but hope to return to Limerick before long, and our priority will be another tour with Declan, this time visiting the Georgian Quarter, and hearing more splendid tales.

Hello WendyAnn_9 I've a big smile on my face reading your kind review. I've never been called a 'walking Wikipedia' before. I'm delighted you enjoyed the tour. Your knowledge of Irish history was excellent. 1,200 years of Limerick's history is a lot to cover in 90 minutes. Thank you for the review and I look forward to meeting you both again.

Declan was an excellent guide - knowledgable, insightful and very entertaining. We took the historical walking tour which covered a lot of history from medieval to modern times. He explained it all in during a very pleasant loop of the old city up to and around King John's castle site. This area has profound significance to European history, absolutely fascinating. And it was all very easy going, along the River Shannon for the most part. We learned a lot and laughed our heads off - it couldn't have been any better.

We went on a walking tour of Limerick with Declan on Sept. 9. There were 20 of us, and we thoroughly enjoyed a warm introduction to Georgian Limerick. Declan's humor and anecdotes kept us keenly interested. Since most of our group members had just landed from a long transatlantic flight, Declan was mindful of their pace and needs. He kindly picked us up at our hotel, and returned us there in time for dinner. We recommend Declan without any hesitation. He can be reached via e-mail limerickguide@gmail.com

Loved having Declan as our guide! He is knowledgeable, excited by history, and extremely interesting to hear putting all the historic pieces together on the tour. He paints a picture of medieval Limerick and it is utterly fascinating!

I booked this tour with Declan Hassett because of the reviews I read here. They were all accurate. Declan met us on time and proceeded to take us on the most interesting tour of Limerick. I am a big fan of Angela's Ashes by Frank MacCourt and he gave us some interesting insights into this book. Declan also was kind enough to show us the People's Park, Georgian architecture and answered all our questions, no matter how silly. I think this is a must do for every tourist to Limerick.

I walked the roads and lanes of Frank McCourt's memoirs with Declan and found it most interesting tour, so nice to put a real picture to a place you have only read about. Declan is great, he took the time out of the end of his very busy day to tour only 2 of us round. You can even tell even he who has done this tour often still gets excited about the information he provides. He is a local man and compares stories of his own father whom is the same age as Frank and grew up in Limerick, confirming the memoir is truly how life was lived. If you have read the book or even watched the movie this is a must. I just emailed him if he was available for the next day and picked a time and place to meet, it was as easy as that.... limerickguide@gmail.com

Recently, my friends and I have done two walkiing tours with Declan who established Limerick Walking Tours (LWT) to give visitors as well as locals an insight into Limerick, past and present.

As you'll see from the LWT website, there are two themed walks: 1, Medieval Limerick and 2. Georgian Limerick.

If this is your first visit to Limerick, it's a good idea to start with the Medieval Limerick tour as Declan covers many of the highlights of Limerick - St John's Castle, St Mary's Catherdral, the Treaty Stone etc. on this tour.

What makes these tours more enjoyable than other city walking tours I have done over the years is that Declan has researched different aspects of the buildings you'll see on the tour as well as stories that you won't read about in the average guidebook.

While I won't steal his thunder on here, you'll be shown buildings where bullet holes remain from Ireland's civil war; the story of Jack Monday, a black African seaman who settled in Limerick during the Ireland's War of Independence and is thought to have the first black man in the army of the new Irish Free State; and, finally, to whet your appetite, you'll be told about the story behind why Prince Milo of the Montengran Royal Family is buried in Limerick.

The second tour focuses on Georgian Limerick, highlighting Limerick's architecture and people since the 1800s. This tour will introduce you to the Georgian area where you'll learn about the history of the People's Park, the lifestyle of Limerick's aristocracy and their servants, the city's maritime history including stories of the 'famine' ships, locations associated with "Angela's Ashes"......and much more.

So while you'll be introduced to the history of Limerick on both tours, these are not stuffy walking tours, much more a fascinating into Limerick brought alive by Declan with stories of the characters who made Limerick what is is today.

My friends and I enjoyed both tours and you too will get a solid insight into Limerick's history as well as other quirky stories by a local guide who takes great pride in his city.

We thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour of Limerick with Declan. The tour started very conveniently at the Hunt Museum and lasted for about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Declan's presentation of the past and present of Limerick and Ireland was very thorough, well-planned and perfectly paced for this 2 hr walk. He was happy to answer all our questions and recommended an excellent seafood restaurant which we enjoyed after the tour. Highly recommended.

We really enjoyed our walk with Declan as our guide. He shared many interesting tidbits on the architecture and history of the area. You pick up the tour by stopping at the tourist information place on the corner of O'Connell and Thomas streets. They will tell you when the next tour will be and you meet Declan there. It is a for fair price of 10Euros that is well deserved.
