- Jim SLimerick, Ireland259 contributionsSuper nice CathedralThis may be the best church / religious building in Limerick. Loads of history inside and out. Awesome stained glass and art on the inside. Bells ring every hour and sometimes are spectacular. Entry fee of €5 when I visited.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 April 2024
- FyingKiwiChristchurch, New Zealand1,132 contributionsHistorical ExcellenceHistorical cathedrals have often been quoted as being over or almost a thousand years old, and so they are if one were to start from where the original was built, but subsequently rebuilt or modified. Here we have a cathedral over a thousand years of age, which existed long before any other building still standing in Limerick, and still in its original glory. This makes its architecture even all the more stunning and admirable. Within, there are also excellent pieces of furnishings which date back hundreds of years, all of which are very clearly described for the visitor. An absolute must visit, whether staying in Limerick or just passing through. This place has an exceptional existent history.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 June 2024
- Dagwood27Cork, Ireland50 contributionsFamily visit on a summer afternoonWhat a beautiful cathedral. It has a most amazing history, which is preserved and shared by the custodians of rhus beautiful place of worship. We were lucky enough to arrive just before a guided tour and tagged along, and boy, am I glad we did. The pamphlet provided for the self guided tour is very informative and easy to follow, but you can not beat a human interaction. Our tour guide was engaging, funny, and so knowledgeable on the history of St Mary's. We planned a quick 20-minute visit, but we easily spent over an hour here, and time just flew by. The graveyard is worth a visit, too. It's beautifully kept and has lots of informative signs placed around so you can learn more of the history.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 August 2024
- nohassle1956380 contributionsNice churchNice place to visit in limerick. 5 euros a person to enter. We had a nice conversation with the lady selling the tickets. Gave us some insight of the church. The church is beautiful. Some nice statues and a beautiful organ. It is nice to see that services still go on every morning. It was fun to walk around. There is no parking per service you just park wherever you can on the street and walk there.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 September 2024

Historic and beautiful church. There was restoration work going on inside, but I was still able to tour most of the church. The stained glass is remarkable. I also enjoyed strolling the grounds outside the cathedral. Lots of wildflowers and other beautiful greenery.

Limerick is usually associated with King's John's Castle but the city also boasts of two cathedrals; St. John's Cathedral and Saint Mary's Cathedral. The latter belongs to the Church of Ireland. A little entry free is surely worth its value.

Well worth a visit especially if you love stained glass windows. Some excellent historic notes too, and a time line of what was going on around the world at the time. I did find the €5 entrance fee a bit strange, it's a working church, normal church service takes place every week. I'm not sure the parishioners pay to pray, but I paid and enjoyed my walk around.

Walked down the street to Saint Mary’s Anglican Cathedral. Cost 5 Euro each for seniors. Gave us a very informative guide and we had a great visit. It is the oldest building in Limerick still in daily use (at least one service per day). The Cathedral was founded in the 12th century on a hill on King’s Island, which is the oldest part of Limerick. There has been an organ here since 1624 with many rebuilds, the last one in 1968 to mark the 800th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone. Beautiful stained-glass window depicting The Ascension.

I generally feel that if you've seen one cathedral, you've seen them all. Saint Mary's was a pleasant exception. The displays were well done, more museum than cathedral, and there were many interesting memorials on the wall. Well worth the time and small price.

We paid the concession rate of €3.50 into the Cathedral. Lots of interesting boards giving the history of the times, plaques on the walls to various families whose kin died in wars, lovely stained glass windows, a leper's slit window.
Well worth a wander around.

This place is incredible. We went inside for a little look and stayed for an hour! It goes back to 1168 and has witnessed so much history from Kings to sieges. It is wonderfully preserved and is still in use as a church to this day. Well worth a visit.

Our first attempt to enter was unsuccessful. Check out time schedule. You walk into the cathedral (Church of Ireland) and travel in time. You receive a well-done handout when you enter. Take at least an hour to walk around and observe all. Also before entering, go the entrance in front of the building. It was once the entrance of King Donal Mor O'Brien's Palace. The stained glass windows are magnicient. The history of the old altar stone is amazing. Look at the bowed wooden ceiling and the chandeliers. There are a number of side altars worth visitin. An, of course, check out the Lepers' Squint.

Are there guided tours of this cathedral or headsets to wear while touring?
Written 5 March 2017
No.unfortunately. Such facilities are not available. The building is beautiful, but all locals will attest that it was much nicer and more atmospheric prior to the 1970s renovations and so-called modernisation. Since then, the walls internal walls are devoid of plaster and colour, which is unusual for Catholic Churches.
