Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Delicious Guinness, great atmosphere and staff - spent a week in Kilkenny and a fair few evenings enjoying a pint here. Staff were lovely, other patrons kind and friendly. Already missing our Kilkenny local! :)

Jun 2023 • Friends
on friday the 16/06th i was in this bar, and i had one of the worst experience of my life! I'm Brazilian, a full-time psychology student, housewife, mother and I sell my art on the street to support my family.
I'm a street artist, and I sell my art in the city to support my family.
After a long day at work,
On 06/16, around 11pm, a Brazilian friend and I, who have also lived in Ireland for many years, decided to go to the Pump House pub because it is a bar with an open area and not a crowded bar.
As I was working previously, I carry with me a display with my works and a troller to carry some heavier stuff.
On entering the pub we were approached by one of the staff who thought my friend and I were tourists looking for a room, I immediately explained that this was my job and that I had no intention of renting a room and that I was just there to drink . Consequently, the bar owner came over and asked what was going on, and I explained again that the volume I was carrying was my job, but I was there for a drink.
That's when things started to take a different turn.
In an authoritarian and rude way, the owner of the bar prevented me from entering, claiming that for me to enter, I should first buy a drink, if I wanted to enter.
Explain
Calmly to him that I was going to have a drink, that I was there for that, but that I needed to put the heavy things I was carrying somewhere, and then I could freely go get my drink.
I tried..
And he again said that to pass, I would have to buy something first.
Trying to understand what was going on, I asked him to let me go to the outside area to see if there were any empty tables, he said I could but stopped me from taking my things with me. When I got outside,
I found some friends sitting around a table.
I went back to the bar, got our drinks and carried the drinks over to the table.
I went back to the entrance to the bar, and grabbed my things.
I placed my panel, which measures around 70x50cm, on top of a table, which was leaning against the wall, and the table was unoccupied, so I didn't run the risk of my work getting wet, nor of disturbing people.
When the bar owner saw that I had placed my art panel on top of the table, he started yelling at me, ordering me to remove my work from there, claiming that the bar was a place to sell beer and not other things. . And I calmly tried to explain to him that I wasn't selling, and even asked the people around us to confirm.
He ignored what I was saying and continued to yell at me making me more and more embarrassed in front of everyone looking at me.
And he kept yelling that he wouldn't come to my work to sell his beer so why did I have to go to his work to sell that.
All of us looked at the inconsistency, because everyone saw that I wasn't selling anything there.
He tried to take my panel roughly but my friend interfered.
I asked him why he was being so ignorant and aggressive towards me.
He didn't answer me, he just looked at me ignoring my speech.
Then I asked if he was doing that because I was black,
And he kept looking at me, ignoring me with an air of mockery.
Right away,
I took my dashboard off the table and he pointed me to a place next to the trash.
I put my dashboard back where he told me to, feeling very unappreciated and ridiculed.
I went back to the table with my friends, not knowing what to do because I wanted to disappear from that place, but as it started to rain very heavily, I was forced to stay in that environment, even though I felt very bad about the way I was being treated, because he continued to find me for about 10min making me feel that I was not welcome in that place.
There are several reasons why I am opening this process,
Mainly because living here in Ireland for 7 years, I see how much society and the population value local producers.
And in these seven years living here, I had never experienced anything like it, Ireland has always welcomed me, and everywhere I go, people always treat me with great respect. I'm married to a white, European man and when I told him what had happened, he immediately advised me to talk to the police, letting me know that the bar owner couldn't treat me like that, that it was a crime, racism is a crime.
And nothing he could have done in the bar that day explains this inhuman attitude of one person towards another.

First, forget about Dublin. If you are traveling the authentic Ireland stay well south and in County Tipperary to get the finest experience. The sites, people, and history are spectacular. Kilkenny, and more specifically The Pumphouse, fully embrace all of this. Originally the town mortuary, this pub oozes character. A terrific homemade toasted sandwich and pint of Guiness are very simple, yet perfectly paired. So give that a shot. The barkeep was excellent and poured the perfect pint. Be sure to take a peek at their beer garden. TLDR: This place has the look, feel, and history of a proper Irish pub.

Great pub in the middle of Kilkenny! Great selection of drinks and a fantastic atmosphere. Staff were so friendly! The BEST nachos we’ve ever had. The salsa, chilli and guacamole are all homemade by the owner’s wife. Ridiculously delicious and perfect with a drink!

The best pub in Kilkenny! The staff are so good, really nice and polite, and can’t do enough for you! The food is lovely from a selection of toasties and soup to pizzas to nachos, the nachos are the best I’ve had in a long time! I love the decor and the newly renovated bathrooms are fabulous! The beer garden is cute and quirky we had a pleasant visit and will be back for sure and would 100% recommend this pub to anyone!
