I found this gallery on a recent trip to Kilkenny. The Blackbird has a large selection of interesting local pieces, and the owner, Valerie, was very friendly and helped me find a great painting to bring something from Kilkenny back home. Valerie also arranged the shipping back to the States, taking some stress off of me. This place is a great find.

Valerie, the proprietor of the Blackbird Gallery, is the personification of charm itself, more than wiling to sit and chat about the artists she shows. She has excellent taste as well - I don't think there was a single thing in the Gallery I did not like. Most of the work is by young Irish artists with a smattering of the more established ones - prints by Le Brocquy for instance. This gallery is a must if you are visiting Kilkenny. It is easy to find in the Kilkenny Design Centre which is opposite the gates of Kilkenny Castle. Thanks Valerie for making my visit so enjoyable.

There is a lot of local art on display. As with a lot of places in Ireland the people are friendly and gave some interesting facts on some of the art.

Lots of beautiful artwork and a friendly owner. We learned about local artists and a bit about Ireland's wildlife too including the mythical hare.

I happened upon Valerie in the Kilkenny Design Center Bakery. After suggesting a few sweet treats she invited me to her gallery located in the renovated stables behind the Design Center. If it weren't for her suggestion, I would have never known to venture into the beautiful area behind the design center. She has a lovely well lit by natural light gallery, with outstanding art by entirely or at least primarily Irish artists. It was a pleasure to meet and visit with you Valerie.

Its been a while since I have been able to buy any art, but still enjoy the feast for the eyes that is the Blackbird Gallery. Pride of place in my house are two pieces I bought from the gallery and I still love them as much as when I bought them some years back. I found the owner to be well informed and have a good eye. She always has a selection that makes me drool every time I drop in. Highly recommend a visit if you are in Kilkenny!

We enjoyed viewing the art but it was very pricey so we did not make purchases this time (although I found several peices I liked). It's worth a look.

Kilkenny is well known for being culturally rich with artists, sculptors and craftsmen of every description and there is no better place to see all these talents brought together than the "Blackbird Gallery".
Valerie Walshe has an impeccable eye when it comes to sourcing the best of Irish talent, each piece is hand picked by herself and displayed perfectly within this quaint and quite unpretentious little gallery. If I were to say anything negative about this gallery it would be that you need to have some serious wall space at home as I can assure you, you wont be coming home empty handed !!!

This was a wonderful find tucked away across from the castle. The owner is very knowledgeable and friendly was happy to discuss all the pieces. The gallery has a wide variety of wonderful paintings and prints from Irish artists. We bought a very reasonably priced piece and it was shipped to the US with no problem and arrived in perfect shape. We couldn't have been happier with the whole experience.

This gallery appears to have closed down and relocated. I heard Valerie opened in Meath somewhere. Does anyone know where?
